Passengers wait to board the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society's Birkenhead tram No. 20, from Birkenhead Ferry Pier to Birkenhead Transport Museum. In case you hand't noticed the machine gun in the background is mounted on captured and restored World War II U-Boat U-534, which is permanently moored at Birkenhead. This photo was taken in May 2009 - do you remember that heatwave?

Swanage Railway's Steam Train Number 53 (built 1905) steams past the medieval ruins of Corfe Castle (Destroyed during the English Civil War in 1645) coming into the Station working a Swanage train from Norden Park & Ride Station. This could be a scene from the 1940's! 28/5/2012

In an effort to recreate a scene from BR steam days (even though I wasn't born then!), I took this monochrome photo of a steam charter crossing the Garbh Ghaoir viaduct, south of Rannoch, in October 2010.

Wren was built at Horwich in 1887 for use on the 7 1/2 miles of 18 inch gauge track around the works. Now preserved at NRM York, we see it at Horwich Works, in steam nearly 20 years after withdrawl and 3 years before the works were closed. The photo was taken at the last Horwich Works open day on 16th August 1980

Preserved 5711 is the sole surviving NSWGR D57 4-8-2, built in the early 1930s for use on heavy goods trains on NSW's steep mountain railways. Contributing to the engine's massive tractive effort (64,000lb) is the three cylinder arrangement, with the middle cylinder's valve actuated by Gresley conjugating gear. The engine was withdrawn in 1961. It is in poor condition, and unlikely to be restored or see traffic ever again, despite it's iconic status. It is displayed at Valley Heights roundhouse.

Recently restored Class 50 No. 50017 "Royal Oak" is shunted at the Plym Valley Railway by the oldest operational Class 08 No. 13002, while various decaying wagons look on.
