To mark 10 years of the Forum, the staff team have decided to donate £1500 of surplus funds accumulated from operating the forum, as a first prize of £1000 and a runners up prize of £500 to Railway Preservation projects to be chosen by the membership.

We're looking for specific appeals, whether that be for instance an infrastructure or rolling stock project, rather than the ongoing operation of a railway or locomotive. Please post your suggestions (including a link to the project appeal where possible) and reasons why the forum should support the project below and if anyone wishes to discuss any suggestion or any other part of this opportunity please use the linked discussion thread.

Timescales:
  • Suggestions must be posted below by the end of Sunday 6 December
  • Voting will be open from Monday 7 December until the end of Sunday 13 December

Please note that you must have more than 5 posts at the time of this post to be eligible to vote.

Are they two separate companies or the same one but with two sites?

I'd like to register my vote for the money to go to the campaign for the restoration of the Beverley to York line

What a great gesture from you!

I would suggest the plan for re-opening the Berkeley Road to Sharpness branch. The VAle of Berkeley Railway.

There is currently a restoration project going on at Washwood heath for a 47 and that is asking for donations or a part ownership of the loco. How about RUK get a part ownership of that brush and see if we can get it named 'RailUK Forums - 10 years'! ;)

Or alternatively, you could spend the money to help reopen the line between Weedon and Leamington!

A reminder that we're looking for active projects that have a group working towards a specific goal and that are basically 'shovel ready' seeking money to start work (or have already started and need additional funds to complete).

Further please can people include links to the project and reasons why people should support them? Just one line naming a project with no link and no detail is unlikely to persuade people to vote for it ;)

An excellent offer! :)

May I please suggest the Swindon Panel Society, who, if you weren't aware, are working towards a goal of preserving the physical panel from Swindon PSB and wiring it up to a computer simulation to provide a truly interactive (and somewhat unique) railway heritage experience.

A building is being constructed at the Didcot Railway Centre to house the panel, and the cash would undoubtedly be highly beneficial to the project as the closure of Swindon PSB is finally drawing near (the Uffington to Rushey Platt section was disconnected last weekend).

The society's website can be found here: http://www.swindonpanel.org.uk/

I would like to suggest the Ivatt Diesel recreation Society (LMS 10000) to kick start the purchase of the main component in the design a class 58 chassis. An "as new English Electric" Mk1 16SVT engine has been bought already and we are discussions with the owners of two ex EM2 electric loco complete bogies for purchase. We are also in discussions to secure a location to undertake chassis/bogie works asap.

Link will be uploaded by someone more adept with computers than I.
Indeed anyone wishing to play a part in this project please feel free to get in touch.

Looking back at last years thread, which was won by the Great Central Close the Gap fund - Congrats to them! And comparing it to some of the current and ongoing projects, I'm going to nominate two of my previous choices from the Southern Region and a new one from the Western Region.

So, Heading it up for the Southern Region are:

My first chosen 2 are both Southern Region Based. Partially because I'm part Southern part Western Region, but because I feel that all 2 still remain underrepresented in the preservation scene so far for the jobs that the performed faultlessly day in day out doing the jobs they were designed for out on mainline - The Day to Day commuter units we all took for granted, for commuting to work on or leisure trips, bashing the stock or going on holiday, to providing longer distance journeys comfortably for the best part of 40-50 years. They are:

The CEP 7105 Project.

The fantastic restoration and eventual return to the mainline that is the CEP 7105 project - Working to restore one of the few remaining 4 CEPs left in existence back to an as built condition. It will be one of the very few preserved Southern Region units with a restored Buffet Car and the restoration is including the cutting out of the Swindon Modifications and return to the original position of the former Guards Compartment behind the cabs. Work is starting already in Eastleigh Works, but there's a lot to do - Replacement of the IC70s seats with original BR EMU seats - I've donated a few, Refurbishment of the interior to remove the funky 70s Swindon Lighting and Bright Colour Palate, the cutting out of the sides and flooring to refit all correct braking equipment, refurbishment and restoration of the former Buffet area - another job thanks to the Swindon Refurbishment. All in all, for those associated with the Southern Region, a very worthy cause to see such an iconic unit refurbished, restored and eventually returned to the Mainline.

No.413 - The Swanage TC Group

Another former Southern Region stalwart, comfortably providing services to the people of Weymouth and the South West with a fast comfortable service for many years, the TC Group get's my third nomination. With only 2 TC Units left in existence, this would be a fantastic opportunity to help restore and return to traffic this popular piece of Southern Region Rolling stock. This TC will be designated unit number 413 - And is made up of predominantly ex BR TC coaches as chosen by London Underground when they had this unit. Unfortunately, as with many items of rolling stock, open storage has led to detrition as caused by the elements but is now being gradually covered up to take account of this. TC 413 will have a designated home on the excellent Swanage Railway - where it will happily work with two of the finest cromptons around - 33012 and in Multi with 33111, and will be restored to the Swanage Railway's high standards.

http://www.4tc.org.uk/unit/index.php

For the Western Region lot amongst us, my other nomination is based on and around that of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

The Broadway Station Appeal.

This ongoing appeal is to raise funds for the building of a brand new Station Building, Waiting Rooms, Footbridge and Signaling all as recreation of a beautiful Great Western Railway Station to serve the town of Broadway - All of which were sadly demolished in the 1960/70s when the Stratford - Honeybourne - Cheltenham Spa railway found itself losing it's passenger services and then ultimately the closure of the route itself.

So far the group, an almost separate group to the main GWSR have managed to raise the funds and construct two platforms - all out of reclaimed Imperial Blue Engineering Bricks and a brand new Signal Box - The design of the box is based upon that of the now sadly demolished box at Shirley just further up the former line, but will still need to raise funds for the reconstruction of the footbridge which despite the main structure being salvaged from Henley-in-Arden, requires new (& expensive) steelwork for the stairs and towers, for the signaling and station building / platform 2 waiting room.

We've all seen what is possible when the money is available - Just take a look at what the GWSR has achieved with the former Monmouth Troy station at Winchcombe and the Severn Valley Railway's beautiful station at Kidderminster, wouldn't it be fitting to see another beautiful and potentially award winning GWR station recreated for the beautiful town of Broadway?

A few pictures of the current progress and station details are available here - the progress, for what is a small band of volunteers has been amazing! And the quicker the money is raised, the quicker the station rebuild can happen.
http://www.broadwaystation.co.uk/station1.htm

This website is being maintained as a modest, independent supplement to the GWSR Website , concentrating on the activities of the GWSR in its pursuit of extending its northern route, and culminating in the re opening of Broadway Station.
The Broadway Area Group(BAG), with the support of the GWR Board, has set themselves the target of having Broadway Station rebuilt and operational as quickly as funds will allow with a target of 2018. There is much still to be done and funds are limited. What there is in abundance is enthusiasm and commitment from the BAG Volunteers. Their single minded determination will see their dream a reality.

If you would like to help with achieving our goal you can join the Broadway Area Group as a volunteer, or become a Friend of Broadway Station. Follow the links above and find out more. Alternatively donations to the Broadway Area Group can be made directly to the BAG Chairman through the Contact link above or by the safe on line donation button below.

If you would like to make a Donation towards the Broadway Station Appeal Fund, please use the safe link below. We can't do it without You!

I hope I've made a good enough case for each of these unique preservation projects, It's been another long day but I hope you'll agree. And to help to move the limelight into the long forgotten Southern Region preservation scene, or giving you the worthy choice to help recreate an attractive Great Western Railway designed station in the Cotswolds. Either way, there are a lot of very worthy preservation projects out there that could all do with our time and funds, and I wish them all the best of luck!

There have been some very deserving nominations so far.

I would like to nominate the Yorkshire Wolds Railway. It is a fledgling project to reopen part of an old line from Malton to Driffield. Fimber Halt was opened on 14 May 2015, and they are looking to extend the stretch of track that they currently have so that they can reach Wetwang (and then Driffield). There are many forum members from the area (including several admins/mods) and I'm sure that they'd like to support the project. There's a mile of track to go before they reach Green Lane in the village of Wetwang. I hope that many of you will also support the reopening of this track. It's a small project, but something that has the capability to blossom and grow into something great.

I would like to second that notion, this is an absolutely brilliant project.

The link is below, much more info available on their Facebook page (as is the case with everything these days!)

How about this one?

https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=920344884717147&id=164169317001378

The society has already purchased the unit and needs to fund its restoration.

With the unit ready the society will be in a position to operate a service once the line is transferred; a process that is currently under way.

The forum could help to bring the opening of the line even closer and help a local community desperate for a service.

My suggestion is the 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust

With the uncertain future over Mainline Steam, and original steam locos becoming older and harder to restore, a new build like this is perfect for heritage lines.

http://www.82045.org.uk/

The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust is in the process of building the next member of the extinct Riddles BR 3MT 2‑6‑2 82000 tank class. Unlike many of the current new build projects, which are aiming to recreate larger main-line types, the new loco is intended specifically for heritage line use.

It has been suggested that this type could be an ideal candidate for limited series production. While the Trust say that this is well beyond their own scope, they believe that making the breakthrough with 82045 could encourage others to take over in the future. Batch production would drastically reduce the unit cost of building new 82000's, estimated at between £1,250,000 and £1,500,000 for 82045.

Success with this project would also open the door to the recreation of the elegant Riddles Class 3 77000 mogul, another long-lost type which is eminently well suited to service on today's heritage lines.

I would like to nominate the Dean Forest Railways move to rebuild Griffithstown station at the site of Speech House Road station.
It's hoped to have a similar set-up to the Broadway extension on the GWSR where the station will be completed and ready and waiting tor the track to arrive, will at the same time being able to secure revenue from the nearby Beechenhurst and Cycle Centre by having a tea room/gift shop/museum outpost.

I'd like to give my nomination for a donation to The Friends of the 502 Group, who are currently cosmetically restoring the only surviving Class 502 unit at Burscough. However, the group's long term aim is to get the unit to run under its own power on the Merseyrail network again. I think this unit really is a survivor, having been stored in the open for fifteen years before it was finally moved to undercover storage in 2012.

I would like to suggest the refurbishment of 31163 back to running condition. I would like to suggest this project as The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway(Where it is based and also where I volunteer) only currently only has one other mainline loco. The refurbishment of this 31 will mean that we are able to take the strain off some of the other smaller sized locos in the fleet and also will mean a loco saved from the brink of scrap.

How about the Pacer Preservation Society? <D

Or perhaps not, especially as the website has closed and the Facebook page hasn't been updated in months... An outbreak of sanity?

I see the project I had in mind has already been nominated above, so I'll just state the following until voting begins: I'm glad to see that the Management have decided to offer two donations this time. Last time, it seemed a shame to see so many deserving projects nominated, with only one prize available.

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
My suggestion would be for a donation to the Strathspey Railways Rails to Grantown Project
http://www.strathspeyrailway.co.uk/rails-grantown/
With huge amounts of work and dedication and the help of Network Rail amongst others they have the bridge of the river Dulnane in place and track laying etc is ongoing. To see this amazing little line running through this amazing part of the world and offering a transport solution to the many tourists would for me and others be just greating.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
To those above with the posts on X Southern Region EMUs if my own nomination doesnt make the grade you have my vote.
