Another reason is spare capacity at the Manchester stations is zero. Moving the Alty, Bury and Rochdale lines has put off the need for expensive improvements in the city centre though travelling to Manairport/EGCC will be faster by bus, as it is to Eccles from city centre, and you get a seat. I loath yellow M5000 trams.

There are some forum members (very much against the idea of anything but heavy rail) who tend to make this point constantly, as a means to ridicule the Manchester Metrolink and also TfGM/GMCA (for their approval of this method of urban travel).

I for one am not, I have no issue with Metrolink to Eccles (though I see the MediaCityUK extension as pointless), out to the Airport, Ashton, etc. What I do have a problem with is it taking over heavy rail services. Light rail IMO should replace the most heavily used bus routes, not trains.

The Eccles line is really for connecting the city to Salford Quays which was and still is poorly served by other modes. Extending the line to Eccles was perfectly logical. The purpose of the airport line is to connect various districts of South Manchester that are geographically isolated. Since the airport is a massive employer in the area it makes sense for trams to serve it. I realise that many members of this site can hardly contain their anti-tram bais, but please come up with better reasons why trams are bad next time. |

TfGM trams are small, few seats, expensive and are relatively slow esp if your commute is let's say Shaw-Manchester, besides in 4 years time Manchester will be a bottle neck with those yellow critters everywhere-stationery, and the tracks will have to be replaced sometime. Oxford Rd station and Victoria station will be as well. The main object is to move people as quickly and cheaply as possible, so in every respect these trams are failures, except on the Altrincham and Bury Lines, and that is why Stagecoach opted out. The old green ones are really very good. I bet that the No 19 bus from Sale to Manchester Airport, and Tenerife! will be faster than one of those yellow critters. |

Again, another anti metrolink post containing no factual info at all. Metrolink is not a failure by any stretch of the imagination. |

The tram from Meadowhall to Sheffield City Centre is around double the time of the train service, but the tram is still very busy because it serves places in between. It also covers the city centre much better than the trains do (which is equally true of the Manchester example - it may be faster from Eccles into the city centre by train but not everyone's final destination is Victoria/ Piccadilly Station). |
