Default Montreal Metro New Cars

The STM unveils the chosen name for its new métro cars

Montréal, May 16, 2012 – Following a public consultation, the STM is today announcing that the name Azur was chosen by the public for the new métro cars. By definition, Azur is evocative of the intense shade of clear blue that best describes the characteristic colour of the Montréal métro. The name Azur also meets the criteria initially set by the STM, as it wanted a short, significant and easy-to-remember name.

Replacing métro cars is a project of considerable importance for the STM and, as such, participation by the general public, as well as by STM employees and those of the Bombardier-Alstom consortium throughout the numerous phases of the project leading to the rolling stock’s introduction into passenger service in 2014 was a given from the start. Indeed, nearly 10,000 people cast their vote on the final selection for a name by voting online on the STM website. The general public is also invited to visit the full scale model on display at Berri-UQAM station from next June 8 to July 8.

Following a first round of consultations, more than 6000 names were submitted by the public. Then, the five most evocative names were pre-selected by the Board of Directors’ Customer service committee. The public was then once again consulted to choose a name among the five finalists. In addition, more than 30,000 people took part in the online consultation about the new cars’ exterior look

From what I remember, the Montreal Metro has some decent, modern stock. It's the Toronto Subway that needs new trains.

Not bad. They seem as though they will do well. I like the describer/map thing which lights up, might provide some entertainment for regulars and will be very useful for tourists like me.

It seems the old ones have a future as well

the decommissioned H-series trains are apparently "headed to Nigeria where they will form the core of a yet-to-be-completed rail network in the country's largest city of Lagos.
Oddly enough, I used to have a flatmate from Nigeria, and we talked about this sort of thing occasionally.

They're not modern at all; in fact the two existing fleets are 46 years and 36 years old respectively. It's thanks in no small part to the forward thinking nature of their design that many people think they're younger.

The MR-63 fleet was built by Vickers came into service when the m´tro opened in 1966. They were derived from a French design, namely the MP-59 that are still used on the Parisian m´tro lines 4 and 11. The MR-73 were introduced in 1976. They are aesthetically similar, discernible by their different headlights and fascia designs and different interior refurbishments. They also sound different due to different electrical motors and braking systems.

Incidentally, for more information that you could hope to consume in a single day about the Montréal métro, its stations, artwork and rolling stock, see metrodemontreal.com

Disappointed the new Montreal cars are not air-conditioned, as they are very warm throughout the year.
