In London does anyone know why people are now holding their arm out similar to the way in one might stop a taxi as trains are arriving into stations? Is this a new fangled thing?

I think I read somewhere that to save time, they're experimenting with making some of the smaller, less used stations (e.g. Clapham junction) request stops.

I thought the new thing for spotters is to hold up a camera and time how long until they're told off by a member of staff.
