To circumvent restrictions on HST power cars, IIRC. Some OHLE wire wear measurement data has been requested and only the NMT's Development Vehicle has it fitted.

That was a ½ and ½ 156 and 158 arrangement.

Of course, it always feels like a bit of a waste if you're attaching a 90mph-capable Express Sprinter to a 75mph-capable (Super) Sprinter.
Yeah, I agree. It would make sense of 150 and 153s to be attached, as they both have top speeds of 75 mph

Or alternative two 153s, especially for peak times on services that are allocated a single 153 unit

I'm guessing that a class 60 and a 395 isn't allowed as an answer?!

Don't know whether this has been mentioned already, but 158s (Sprinter) and 170s (Turbostar) aren't an uncommon pairing in and around Edinburgh Waverley. The combination always looks quite jarring, but maybe that's just me.

Take a look at this. http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrewt...bouttransport/

I'm not sure whether the end carriage was a 150/1 or 150/2, but you don't see that everyday
