east didsbury crossover

What is the purpose of the crossover near east didsbury on the Manchester airport to picadilly line. Does it get used often if there was a problem and when was the last time it was used?

It is no longer used. I believe it is no longer in sectional appendix, and one of the rails has been removed.

It certainly hasn't been used in the last 2 years.
