Looks like a new freight flow from Knowsley to Wilton starting up13.12.15(see RTT).Route of outward journey is by Wallgate/Bank Quay/Stockport and the Calder Valley, return empties run via Calder Valley/Victoria/Chat Moss or by the more direct Victoria/Walkden/Crow Nest line....this must be the first booked freight on this section since God were a lad?

I was driving home through Simonswood in Kirkby the other night and noticed lights on and orangemen around this facility and also at Upholland station. I had wondered what work was taking place but you might have just answered the question for me.

The Knowsley-Wilton working takes household waste from the Merseyside area to an energy from waste plant on Teesside...a comprehensive description of the operation can be found on the SITA website..this looks to be a long term traffic flow.:D

Only paths at the moment - the traffic isn't due to start for a few months yet...

Showing as "activated" today- doesn't that mean it will probably run?
Another one in the timetable later on tonight- not yet activated.

From their actual website I don't think the terminal will be ready until January. It will then run (potentially) for 30 years though!

Ok , so RTT now says the train "cancelled by customer" but from the above, all concerned must have known for some time that it wasn't going to run today , so why was it "activated"? I can see why the path would appear today but can someone explain the meaning of activated in this context?

Several hundred freight services run each day - it would be hugely
labour intensive to 'activate' them all by hand, so most are set to
activate automatically, when they run or not.

Such trains are easy to spot on RTT - the activation time is exactly
one/two hours before the departure from the origin point.

Which operator will be running these? There are FL light engine movements in the Calder Valley at present, presumably route-learners, but I thought the Binliners were to be run by DBS.

We are getting spoilt for freight now in the CV.

Isn't the Stockport / Calder valley a similar path used by the biomass traffic out of Port of Liverpool?

It looked like it was starting today !! 23rd April, Knowsley - Tees Yard via Mid Cheshire line, it was reported as passing Rainford at 13:11, but it must have been a mistake as it was later cancelled !

Yes it ran yesterday (Friday) with 66152; fairly sure this was the first run. Empty flats only, no containers. Not sure when the loaded train starts.

It looks like freight is going to return to the Kirkby to Wigan line six days a week as Potter Logistics reopen their Knowsley terminal.

The first freight train since 2006 last week came through Potter Logistics’ Knowsley rail freight terminal, just east of Liverpool in the northwest of England, in a revival of regular services at the site.

A new twice-daily train service will operate five days per week and once on Saturdays and will initially move freight from Knowsley Industrial Park to the northeast of England.

Following work by Network Rail, the Potter Logistics site is now reconnected to the West Coast mainline at Wigan and onto the rest of the UK network including Europe via the Channel tunnel. This presents several rail freight opportunities for the development land at the terminal, the company claimed.

Potter Logistics managing director Matthew Lamb commented: “We are delighted that the Knowsley train terminal connection has reopened, which allows Potter Logistics to further extend its rail activities. Freight trains into Knowsley represent a significant milestone for the terminal and opens up the adjacent terminal land for rail freight usage.”

Founded in 1965, Potter Logistics employs around 300 staff providing specialist logistics solutions focusing on the chemical, agricultural, pharmaceutical and food industries. Potter Logistics operates six distribution centres located in Droitwich, Ely, Knowsley, Ripon, Selby and York.

I think they are referring to the "Binliners" to be honest which the first trial trains already operated. The rail image in the article is actually one of those trains too. The frequency of the service and destination as per article co-incides with the "binliner" schedules and Wilton, being in the North East also.

Now if is anything else, then it has been kept very quiet indeed and would be "news" indeed.

Yes as far as I know it is the binliner trains and it reality it is just confirmation that the service is going to run but at least it is step in the right direction. It will be interesting to see if the adjacent Peel site provides further traffic in the longer term.

Not sure if it is accurate, but I have heard that there are "problems with the loading equipment" at Knowsley.

Ha yes I had heard the same problem as Bevan I think. Some kind of damage to the actual building during a 'shunting mishap'.
