I can't give "chapter and verse" for each one; but could they be band-leaders? (Am aware that Bill Bailey was one such.)

As I started to read your answer I thought you'd got it until I saw you meant band leaders.

Don't forget I asked "Who or what might be called..."

Given that the only significant phrase ahead of "band leaders" in that was "chapter and verse" I enter that they are all authors?

If they were composers, poets, popes, sea areas or band leaders the question would read "Who or what are called..."

That doesn't help. If they "might" be called something they "might" be called astronauts or the Duchess of Atholl. Who knows? :D

It is a clue and although one is unlikely to be called astronauts (although there's no accounting for taste) Duchess of Atholl could be a somewhat pretentious possibility.

Are there no students of 20th century English literature out there?

Add Plato to the list of names.

Philosophers. Its Saturday night, I had a beer and I'm guessing.

It's not philosophers and moreover I believe it's against forum rules to participate in "Quizzes and Games" while intoxicated.

Three more names:

Admetus, Electra, Demeter

...and a hint:

Andrew Lloyd Webber

With the hint... they're cats from Cats.

Cats is correct although the origin of the names is "The Naming Of Cats by T. S. Eliot"

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey
...

Your turn...

The late film critic Roger Ebert wasn't exactly known for his restraint. When he didn't like a movie, everyone knew about it. Arguably his most scathing and famous review contained the words:

Roger Ebert said:
I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it.

Of which film is he writing about?

North. Had Dan Akroyd in it which was about the only plus point.

It was indeed North. A truly terrible movie, and well deserving of that criticism. As a taster:

Something to do with Carrie Fisher not being able to do it? Although thinking about it it could be any one of the various musicians I suppose.
