On Monday, I'm heading to Nottingham by train. Clearly, the train will not stop at Ilkeston as it isn't ready yet. Is it possible to take a bus from Nottingham to Ilkeston and then another bus from Ilkeston to somewhere further along the line in a Sheffield direction ie: Langley Mill or Alfreton?

Also, fares and timings of these departures would be welcome :)

Thank you in advance.

Yes. Lots of buses.

Here's the main bus services to Ilkeston:

Every 10 minutes from Nottingham to Ilkeston:

(There's also much slower, less frequent services on the 18 and 21)

The Black Cat runs every hour to Langley Mill.

After 1700 there's a handful on the Ilkeston Flyer too.

There's frequent buses to Heanor to change for Alfreton.

The trentbarton two goes from Nottingham to Ilkeston every 10 minutes. The black cat goes from Ilkeston to Langley Mill every hour.

Edit: See Deerfold's more comprehensive reply above.

Your best ticket would probably be a zig-zag, for the initial payment of £6, you can then use it on virtually any service for the rest of the day.

I see that the railway station and bus station in Nottingham are on other sides of the city centre. What is the walking time between these? Is it better to use the tram (price?)?

Not more than 15min brisk walk. The stop outside the Theatre Royal is closest, as the bus then veers back out of town to Victoria bus station (see Googlemap on the link above). This is right next to a tramstop, for which you will need another ticket costing £2.20 single, or you can use the free Centrelink electric bus.
