Default Is thetrainline.com correct with this return trip

If I ask for a return from Southampton Central to Millbrook (Hants) leaving after 10:00 and returning after 11:00 the same day. It offers the return trip as going on to Romsey and then returning through Millbrook - where the train does not stop - back to Southampton.

I don't think that's right, as I can't see a relevant easement (there are easements involving Romsey, including one that makes no sense to me, but none appear to apply here, and there isn't a group that would allow doubling-back and even if there was that doesn't apply if the origin and/or destination are in the group).

However if you book it online, print out the itinerary, and carry it with you, it could be argued that creates a binding contract. Having a seat reservation and sitting in the exact seat possibly further strengthens your case. I would strongly advise against buying a ticket by any other means and doing such a journey. It is additionally worth printing out an itinerary on the National Rail website (if it will provide the same itinerary).

I can only get the route to come up on National Rail or SWT by specifiying 'via Romsey' and evn then they appear to correctly quote for two separate single tickets.

Does the train back pass through Millbrook though? ISTR that some Romsey - Southampton trains go via Chandlers Ford/Eastleigh.

OTH that may be a complete red herring

the return is a FGW train from Romsey to Southampton which passes through Millbrook without stopping.

You can also get this route on a couple of other trains - one in each direction. (Using FGW site)

A puzzle.

A similar option was just given by raileasy. Journey tomorrow winchester to langley. One of the suggested journeys at 09:33 is to travel from Winchester to Southampton Airport Parkway by SWT then return through Winchester (not stopping) to Reading by XC then Reading to Langley by FGW.

BTW Trainline and FGW ticket buying sites are not working at the moment - says site is busy try later.
