Many apologies if similar question has been asked before.
From Rugeley Trent Valley to Aberystwyth I can go either Rugeley TV - Birmingham NS - Aberystwyth OR Rugeley TV - Stafford - Wolverhampton - Aberystwyth Are both of these classed as permitted routes? Thank you. |

Permitted routes from RUGELEY TRNT VAL to ABERYSTWYTH route ANY PERMITTED
RUGELEY TRNT VAL is a routeing point. ABERYSTWYTH is associated with these routeing points: Machynlleth Group. The following are ALWAYS Permitted routes: Any direct trains advertised from RUGELEY TRNT VAL to ABERYSTWYTH in the current timetable The shortest route with a regular train service, not including walks and transfers (133.29 miles): * RUGELEY TRNT VAL * Walsall Group * WOLVERHAMPTON * SHREWSBURY * Machynlleth Group The following are Permitted unless there is an easement preventing them: Any route 136.29 miles or less (i.e. within 3 miles of the shortest route above). Which includes via Stafford as this route is 135 miles. Mapped routes from RUGELEY TRNT VAL to Machynlleth CNhttp://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf#page=18 Any additional route allowed by an easement. So in answer to your question, the routes you wish to take are both permitted.

sonic2009's reply may need a little explanation.
Rugeley TV - Birmingham NS - Aberystwyth is a mapped Permitted Route using map CN. It seems to me that Rugeley TV - Stafford - Wolverhampton - Aberystwyth is a Permitted Route because it's not more than 3 miles longer than the shortest route. It may actually be the shortest route with a regular passenger service. |

Sorry i wasn't clear enough, I would agree that the shortest route for the majority of the day is via Stafford.
But the shortest route for the 1846 from Rugely TV would be : Rugely TV - Walsall Walsall - Wolverhampton
