2.4 Walrus (ITSO)

Walrus is Merseytravel's upcoming smartcard, which will be available to buy online, at a travel centre or via telesales. It will be able to be topped up at Merseytravel stations, ticket centres and online.

Walrus will be valid on rail, bus and ferry travel in the Merseytravel area. Initially only season ticket or day savers will be able to loaded on, but in 2014, it should also implement pay as you go travelling. Walrus holders will also recieve some benefits at shops, restuarants, bars and tourist attractions across Merseyside.

2.6 Others

Other smart card systems are being brought into use, including these ITSO schemes:
  • Scotrail Smartcard for selected routes
  • London Midland for selected routes
  • Tyne & Wear Metro's 'Pop Card'
  • Glasgow Subway
  • Many Concessionary Travel Cards

All English local authorities are issuing smart card passes under the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) to persons of pensionable age. In general, these cards give free bus travel from 09:30 to 23:00 (and all day sat, sun and bank holidays) and some areas give extra refinements to local people only (example longer hours on buses, validity beyond England, and/or discounts or free travel on trams or trains).

New cards being issued by certain authorities from late 2012 (example west yorkshire) feature an ITSO wallet, for future use to store electronic funds.
