All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –January 1957

Sixty years ago Standard class steam locomotives were still in production and diesel shunter production was progressing at a steady rate. There was also a steady flow of new diesel multiple units.

In the month seventy steam locomotives were withdrawn, thirty three being over fifty years old with Midland Railway 0-6-0 58142 being the oldest at eighty two years old.

I have photographed some of the above later in life and it can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome.

92093 built 1957.
Scrapped just ten years later. What a waste!

In the month fifty two steam locomotives were withdrawn, twenty nine being over fifty years old with Midland Railway 1142 Class 0-6-0 58156 being the oldest, having been built by Beyer Peacock, entering traffic in April 1876 and condemned seventy nine years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older main line secondary passenger engines and freight engines who were at the bottom of the cascade of power from the continued delivery of the Standards and Diesel Multiple Units. Only four locomotives condemned were Post Grouping designs, namely two from the unremarkable London Midland and Scottish Railway 7F, 0-8-0 class, a London Midland and Scottish Railway 2-6-0-0-6-2T Garret (being replaced by the far more modern a versatile Standard 9F) and a London and North Eastern Railway class V4, 2-6-2 which was one of a class of only two locomotives and therefore “non standard”

In the month forty six steam locomotives were withdrawn, twenty five being over fifty years old with London Brighton and South Coast Railway E1R Class 0-6-2T 32695 being the oldest, having been built at Brighton Works, entering traffic in September 1876 and condemned eighty years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older main line secondary passenger engines and freight engines who were at the bottom of the cascade of power from the continued delivery of the Standards and Diesel Multiple Units. Only five locomotives condemned were Post Grouping designs, namely an unremarkable London Midland and Scottish Railway 7F, 0-8-0 class, two London Midland and Scottish Railway 2-6-0-0-6-2T Garret (being replaced by the far more modern a versatile Standard 9F) and two Great Western Railway tank engines (a 14xx 0-4-2T and a 51xx 2-6-2T)

This month was the first month when new Class 08 shunters were delivered with D prefixes in stead of the 13 series numbers. However the private contractors would continue to deliver their new shunting locomotives with the old 11 series numbers until November 1957 when they switched over to the D prefix.

In the month fifty seven steam locomotives were withdrawn, thirty being over fifty years old with Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway 1142 Class 0-6-0 58121 being the oldest, having been built Kitsons, entering traffic in June 1875 and condemned just short of eighty two years later. The majority of these withdrawals were the older main line secondary and branch line passenger engines and old freight engines who were at the bottom of the cascade of power from the continued delivery of the Standards and Diesel Multiple Units. Ten locomotives condemned were built post the 1923 grouping, namely two Great Western Railway tank engines (a 58xx 0-4-2T and a 45xx 2-6-2T), a Southern Railway N15 4-6-0, three London Midland and Scottish Railway Class 4P 4-4-0’s, a 7F, 0-8-0 and a 2-6-0-0-6-2T Garrett, and a London and North Eastern Railway D16 4-4-0 and an A5 4-6-2T. Only three of these ten locomotives however were post grouping designs.

Diesel shunter production was progressing at a steady rate with seventeen locomotives delivered in the month. There was also an increasing flow of new diesel multiple units. The highlight however was the first of the Pilot Scheme main line diesel programme to be delivered in the form of English Electric Type 1 D8000.

Eighteen locomotives condemned were built post the 1923 grouping, namely twelve Great Western Railway tank engines (6 14xx/58xx 0-4-2T, a 51xx 2-6-2T and two a 45xx 2-6-2T), two London Midland and Scottish Railway Class 4P 4-4-0’s, and four London and North Eastern Railway N2 0-6-2T. Only the six 14xx/58xx tanks however could be considered as a post grouping design.

Seventeen locomotives condemned were built post the 1923 grouping, however only twelve could be considered as a post grouping design.
