Hi
Does anyone have any timetables/WTT of VT's old Portsmouth Harbour service I could use as I'm trying to create a scenario for one of these services on Railworks TS2012 Cheers, Jim. |

There was a Liverpool-Poole service which called at Hartford at 17:59 if that's any help.

Just to point out, this service went via Salisbury, Bristol, Severn Tunnel Junction, Shrewsbury and Crewe (as opposed to Virgin's route via Guildford, Reading and Birmingham). Not sure if it reversed at Newport or simply used the Maindee curve.

The service to Liverpool, via Salisbury, was the only service other than the Waterloo - Cardiff service not booked to call at Salisbury AFAIK.

Attached is the TT from '98.
Attachment 11699 I've left out the WW train, as mentioned above it did not go via Reading. Incidentally in '98 still showing as via Newport both ways.

I think the Pompey - Liverpool and vice versa was the only Wales and West to the city - and at one point was part of a coupled set from Manchester to West Wales which split and coupled at Newport ! - certainly towards the end of its days it went via Maindee thus requiring it to have a public hearing before withdrawal. Many of these exotic trains were Orcats raiders against other operators , to the extent that W&W were asked to explain their existence by the ORR ......

Actually (I appreciate this strays from the original topic however) looking a bit deeper, WW had a basically hourly service at Portsmouth to/from Cardiff for most of the day with occasional extensions at certain times to/from Tenby, Carmarthen, Haverfordwest, Milford Haven, Pembroke, even Barry Island

And didn't South West trains do a daily Brighton to Penzance service as well? It's interesting to see how some of these rather odd infrequent services from BR days have now gone as a result of franchise changes. Do FGW still do a daily Malvern-Wymouth service and do SWT still do an infrequent Waterloo-Bristol service? And didn't that use to run to Cardiff (or possibly Swansea) and has now been cut back? --- old post above --- --- new post below --- These services can be useful so that Councillors and transport managers can claim that there is a direct rail service between two locations, but I wonder how many people use them end to end? W&W operated services from Manchester, Liverpool, Pembroke Dock, Carmarthen and Swansea to Waterloo, Brighton, Portsmouth, Plymouth and Penzance at various times with 158s. FGW operate services from Brighton, Portsmouth and Weymouth to Cardiff, Gloucester and Great Malvern. |
