Default Dawlish Wanderings - the start of a busy month

Yesterday saw my much anticipated trip down to the South West. Thanks go to Virgin for the free tickets - was well worth 10 hours on a Voyager

http://jst.fotopic.net/dawlish for the pictures. Heres a sneak preview:

Still to come this month - all with Virgin Trains:

Weds 14th - Bournemouth and Lymington Line.
Thur 15th - Edinburgh
Weds 28th - Birmingham Bash

The weather in Paignton was excellent on Wednesday. Doesn't seem as good at dawlish

No need for a coat on Dawlish front - said it all for me. Only start of March too.

Nope, was very warm. I came home and said;

"march...!"

http://jst.fotopic.net/p39238038.html That is infact that 1000 London Paddington-Paignton via Bristol.

Plymouth trains don't stop at Dawlish at that time of day.

I was interested in that the Voyager we got down to Paignton terminated in one platform then was shunted across to the other to leave. Seemed all very odd when there is a footbridge.

Trains can't leave from platform 1 as there is not a crossover. All trains going further than the limit of shunt must leave from plat 2, or go into Goodrington sidings. It would make sense to re install the crossover that was once there.

http://jst.fotopic.net/p39238066.html That isn't actually a signalbox either

Yer, one freight per day at about half 3? Or is it earlier than that, well the Wool sand anyway... maybe two if you are lucky and the Hammy stone decides to run.

No other freight beyond Fawley is there?

Less than once a day... I think there are about 3 a week. Depends if the Hammy stone decides to run, apparently it's running more from the Spring anyway.

Not anymore freight beyond Fawley I can think of, except engineers drops.

We used to shunt behind the signal with a 159 to come back over the crossover. Funny when there was a rusty railways train about to leave too - I'd wait for the dummy and race him out.

Don't know what the people at the crossing thought - 2 trains leaving at once.

If you watch the drivers in the cab on the up platfrom - *loody big herring gulls land right by the cab waiting for a bit of a sandwich or something.

Seagulls are fare dodgers!

Trains racing out of Paignton is pretty intersting. 150 vs 220 was different!
