Default The Dr Syn Railtour - 26/05

Hi all. Today I photographed 66035 + 66237 top and tailing the Dr Syn railtour from London Victoria to the Isle of Grain, Folkestone Harbour and Dungeness. I visited 5 locations which were Westernhanger, Folkestone Harbour, A bridge on the Harbour branch, Dungeness and Appledore.

When I click on some of the thumbnail, I get a message saying the image has been moved or deleted.

Love the area around Dungeness - the landscape is unique.

I'm going to contact fotopic about this message that is coming up on my photos. Thing is I haven't moved or deleted any of them.

I too love the Dungeness area especially when the weather is hot and when there is no clouds.

I have never seen a Class 66 Railtour why on earth would you want a 66 pulling you on traction! It baffles me!

It baffles me too. 66s weren't disigned for railtours because they haven't got ETH and they are limited to 75/65 MPH. I've noticed that all of UK Railtour's tours are 66 operated. Why couldn't EWS use 37/4s or 67s on it. They did with the Bird n Birch using 37411 + 37425.

The only time when I would want a 66 hauling me would be in 40 - 50 years time when they being replaced and withdrawn.

3 years ago there was a railtour that had the same route as the Dr Syn and that had top and tailed 66s.

Its class 66 because its not a basher tour and more of a sightseeing tour!

Looking at the people on board the train, they looked as if they were sightseeing. The tour was sold out aswell.

Are there not enough 67s for this purpose?

It might, subtily (sp), also serve a purpose for a few people who are desperate for 66 haulage.

The odd VSOE has also been hauled a 66, or 59.

UK Railtours seem to run tours aimed at line bashers and the general public, so the traction doesn't really matter as much. Operationally it's probably cheaper and easier to use 66s as there's only a handful of 37/4s around and 67s have a higher route availability.

I thought that the use of 66s would be cheaper and easier.

UK railtours didn't ask for any particular motive power on the tour - though John Farrow expected it to be a pair of 66s when I spoke to him the day UK Railtours opened for business. To have specified motive power would have cost more money - which from a business point of view would have been totally unnecessary as the train filled anyway. (Remember, John Farrow is a businessman, and a successful one too). I suspect 67s may not be cleared for all the lines the tour did anyway.
