On SWT you must be 18 in order to work on the platforms due to the safety-critical nature of the job. You can apply for a ticket office-only role at the age of 16 though (or at least you could last time I looked). The legal minimum age limit for mainline drivers is 21, or 18 for depot/shunter drivers.

Hmm
16 or 18 for a station assistant job... Well can someone try and answer that for Merseyrail from this info: This job advert specifically says be 18 for a guard: http://www.merseyrail.org/recruitmen...d=12&iJobId=23 This station supervisor also specifically says 18: http://www.merseyrail.org/recruitmen...d=12&iJobId=24 Station retailer says 18 too: http://www.merseyrail.org/recruitmen...d=12&iJobId=25 But this station assistant says nothing about minimum ages: http://www.merseyrail.org/recruitmen...d=12&iJobId=26 Would anyone agree with me that it seems like Merseyrail have no minimum age for station assistant, (so 16)??? |

I believe there are minimum legal ages and any age above that is down to the discression of the company concerned.

LUL drivers minimum age is 18.
All safety critical posts are minimum age 18yrs. However I believe MerseryRail are all self dispatch stations with the Guard performing dispatch duties alone, if this is the case then 16yrs would seem a reasonable age - best get onto MerseyRail HR for confirmation.

London Underground employed a 19 year old who had worked in a DIY store on a weekend as a Service Controller.
They didn't qualify though. Then again never did any of the others, including those much older. As the age of safety critical responsibility as defined by the TWA and now ROGS is 18 years old. I wonder if the companies that use an age of 21 could be in breach of the Age Discrimination Act.... Hmmm..... |
