Thread Open BVE - installing routes and trains

Good evening from New Zealand

Thanks to member Skydo, I have now successfully installed Open BVE on my PC. I also looked at a Video clips of Open BVE in motion and was most impressed. At the moment I have all the files in a directory, which I named Open BVE. Whilst I am very used to the BVE 2 and 4 directions with the object, route , sound and train files, I wonder if I could ask whether this works the same way with Open BVE. In other words how do I download routes, objects and trains etc to which directory. Sorry to be so ignorant, but Open BVE is quite new to me.

Any guidance from members would be appreciated.

Enjoy your Sunday,

Ed Bakker

Short answer: it works pretty much the same way as with BVE 2 and BVE 4.

Longer answer:
- You have route, object, sound, and train files, in the same locations relative to each other as always, though they can be in a completely different folder than the main program.
- You may be more likely to encounter .zip archives rather than installers because the latter are platform specific (say, Windows only) and so their use is discouraged
- Exterior views for trains are sometimes offered separately. They are usually extracted to the train's main folder; if you do it correctly, you should find a file named extensions.cfg right next to train.dat and panel.cfg/panel2.cfg.

Dear Ed,
Now, all you have to do is go to the OpenBVE homepage http://openbve.trainsimcentral.co.uk/
Click on the "Using" tab, to get the key functions. After you learn the keystrokes for all the main functions, you will have it made. Also you may use your joystick to drive, as well as play in arcade mode to keep score. I am not brave enough for those yet, my driving is horrible. I will stick to keyboard and no scoring for now.
Then you can play with the exterior views, and side views, and all the other features. Read the train "readme" or use your right arrow key to see the side of the engine. A lot of the trains have the startup procedure listed on the train itself.

Everyone has their favorite way to install OpenBVE. I placed it in my BVE4 folder, but I have to be careful if a BVE4 route or train has the same name as an OpenBVE route or train. You may choose to combine, or as Valero said, put OpenBVE anywhere you want to.

It wasn't too long ago, I was asking questions, now I can very occasionally answer one. In a few months time, you will be answering questions from people that are new to BVE and OpenBVE.
