Actually the barriers should be able to tell the difference between a Adult ticket and a Child ticket depending on the setup the Operator has chosen, for example with the FCC gatelines you can tell the system to set off a alarm when a child ticket is used, the barriers simply don't accept the ticket and a manual check is done.

These apply to just the FCC gatelines but I'm quite sure equally apply to any regardless of location or operator.
