Hi all
I've booked an advance from Manchester Airport to Newcastle tomorrow morning and I'm on the following trains. 0537 to 0722 - MIA to YRK - TPE booked in for P5 0731 to 0837 - YRK to NCL - XC booked in for P11 I know the minimum connection time is 8 minutes at York but were carrying heavy rucksacks and if the TPE is more than 5 late, we may miss the train. Are we ok to board the 0737 EC service to Newcastle if we miss the 0731 or will we have to wait for the 0828 (the next XC) northbound? Cheers. Tom Last edited by Chapeltom; 25th June 2012 at 14:15. |

EDIT: If it is a through ticket from Manchester Airport routed 'TPE & Connections' you'll be fine.

Platform 5 to 11 is quite doable in 2 minutes - use the subway instead of following everyone over the footbridge. It is not uncommon for services to be put on different platforms at York, so that could happen to your advantage.

Folks,
I have a similar question. If I am booked on a TPE Manchester Piccadilly - Glasgow Central train and this is cancelled or heavily delayed, timetabling and connections allowing, could I catch a Manchester Piccadillly (ex Manchester Airport) - Windermere TPE as far as Lancaster or Preston and then continue the journey northwards by Virgin ?

The 07:31 York to Newcastle advance is likely to be XC only
From what I can see you would need to wait until the 08:28 Equally, the advance ticket may be deemed to be invalid, as the connection time for the service was met I would therefore suggest sending an email to Cross Country explaining the situation They will then send you an open authority letter and reservation for the second service (ie 08:28 departure) |

Thanks HHF. On occasions were there are delays you are often told that other TOCs will accept your tickets. I take it that this is example of a ticket being " specially authorised by TOC1 and TOC2 control centres" ?

Its a through ticket, amazingly if we had split the advances you could get them for £21.50 adult fare now.
Walking Hadrians Wall for those interested. Then up to Milngavie on Saturday for the West Highland Way, coming back from Fort William a week on Thursday, not looking forward to long 10 hour journey home! By almost 3 hours it'll be the longest journey I have ever done. |

I don't understand this. If the minimum connection time has been met then surely the ticket would be valid for the next service, in the event that he misses the XC train due to delays, or have I got the wrong end of the schtick?

I think rail-britain fell into the same trap I did by making the assumption that it was split tickets (despite no real evidence for that assumption). However, when I read it again I realised my error and edited my post.

The OP is suggesting they may miss the next connection due to a large amount of luggage With an advance ticket the ticket holder would be at fault, for missing the connection However, if the incoming service was late then the next service could be used (verified with the station staff present) |

It doesn't matter if it's split tickets or through tickets, but the only piece of information we needed, which was the route printed on the ticket, was not provided initially, thus causing confusion.
rail-britain has also misunderstood, because the OP has said if the train is 5 minutes late then the remaining 3 minutes may not be enough. Well, if you know exactly where you are going, and know which doors to get off (and are first off!) then it will be enough. Otherwise, it may not be, but the request is over-complicating things, as really it isn't a baggage question it's a delay question. |

It should not matter whether you are first off, last off, and/or know where you are going, all passengers from a connecting service should make the connection
