Off peak - journey break?

Hi Guys,
I have an off peak from Paignton to Yate (out 8/03/12, return 12/03/12)

Can I break (out and back) for a few hours (same day) at Bristol Temple Meads (where I change trains)?

Will the ticket be retained by the machine leaving Bristol TM?

Just for Info.
I have train/seat number reservations out and back. Would have to change the return Bristol TM train to a later time to allow for the extra few hours looking round Bristol. Not worried about not having a later seat reservation, just whether they will let me on the later off peak train with an earlier train reserved seat off peak ticket.

Kind Regards

Angela
Is there a validity code database (or is it an expert lookup task with a pdf), to save me burning forum member's time again?

Break of journey is permitted.

These are the general rules regarding break of journey:-
National Rail Conditions of Carriage said:
16. Starting, breaking or ending a journey at intermediate stations You may start, or break and resume, a journey (in either direction in the case of a return ticket) at any intermediate station, as long as the ticket you hold is valid for the trains you want to use. You may also end your journey (in either direction in the case of a return ticket) before the destination shown on the ticket. However, these rights may not apply to some types of tickets for which a break of journey is prohibited, in which case the relevant Train Companies will make this clear in their notices and other publications.

Conditions for Off Peak Return (SVR) tickets
http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/ticketterms/show?ticketTypeCode=SVR

National Rail Enquiries said:
A break of journey is allowed on the outward portion unless otherwise indicated by a restriction shown against the ticket's Restriction Code and is allowed on the return portion of your ticket.
Restriction Code for this ticket is: WG

Thanks for your quick replies, Transportphoto and Yorkie.

Saved me a lot of concern.

Hopefully those nice station people at Bristol TM won't take my ticket and will let me on the later train! I'll tell them it's a WG.

When booking, you can specify a longer time for transfers to engineer a few hours break but still having reservations for the correct trains. This applies even in the case of advance tickets - but of course, then you would only be able to stop off to use station facilities at the "break" station (but that could provide the opportunity to meet a friend/colleague, especially if the station has decent lounge facilities or an on-site pub!

So does that apply for off peak day returns throughout the country? I'm doing Cambridge-Felixstowe tomorrow and want to break at Ipswich.

Break of journey is always allowed on both portions of an Off Peak Day Return so what you want to do is fine.

There shouldn't ever be any restrictions on break of journey on either outward or return portions of Off Peak Day Return (CDR) tickets. (However there are some restriction codes used by LM that break this principle, but this only applies to Route: LM Only flows, not inter-available tickets. I have doubts that the codes are complaint, let alone enforceable).

The rules officially do allow for such a restriction but if that is the case "the relevant Train Companies will make this clear in their notices and other publications" so if they do not do this, then the restriction does not stand according to NRCoC.

If they did introduce such restrictions then I would ask some questions as I was told that the new rules, since Simplification, that allowed them to introduce such a restriction, were not designed to introduce more restrictions. I was promised that the new rules were in fact increasing the number of tickets that allowed break of journey, not decreasing them.

Before Simplification it was apparently "complex" and all tickets of the code CDR (then called Cheap Day Return) allowed break of journey on both portions. Since Simplification is is apparently more "simple" and we are now supposed to check the restriction code for CDR (now called Off Peak Day Return) tickets.

It is highly unlikely your ticket will be retained by a human at the exit of a station when it has or could have further validity. There's a small possibility of it happening with a badly-programmed gate, but you can always ask a gateline attendant to fish it out.

I have had exactly that request refused at Temple Meads. Politely but firmly refused.

(After some time, the expense of an additional ticket, some correspondence and more time later, my 'financial loss' was re-imbursed, but my consequential losses were permanent.)

Oddly, I too have had a refusal of a request to retrieve a ticket unexpectedly retained at Bristol Temple Meads. It was firmly refused, but not particularly politely.

Since that incident, I have politely, but firmly refused to place any railway ticket in a barrier at that station.

Bristol Temple Meads barriers have cropped up before. Several people have reported problems.

The barriers retained my ticket. I was told that I should have anticipated that (despite this not being the behaviour at stations that I regularly use tickets at, such as King's Cross) and it was my fault. I should have asked to be let through manually and not used the ticket gates, I was told. I had to talk to an incredibly rude woman who finally did let me through, but she was reluctant and treated our group as if we were a huge inconvenience to her.

However I would not expect the barriers to retain a ticket that retained validity onward to Yate, so there should be no problems for the OP.

If there is a general problem in the set-up of barriers at a station, as there appears to be here, shouldn't this get reported to the regulators for some action?

It's not good enough for customers to routinely be treated rudely and forced to grovel for their ticket back, when it shouldn't have been taken in the first place.
