Please can anyone tell me which services on the Cumbrian Coast Mon - Fri are booked to be operated by class 153 units? Im planning a trip from Leeds to Leeds via the Cumbrian Coast, but dont really wanna drop on a service that is operated by a class 153 if i can help it. Im not sure which way round the Cumbrian Coast im going yet so the two services i would catch are:

1247 Carlisle to Barrow (is this service booked a 153 or 156?)
or
1331 Barrow to Carlisle (is this service booked a 153 or 156?)

For the views and scenary - if im travelling from Barrow to Carlisle am i better sitting at the left side of the train in the direction of travel? and from Carlisle to Barrow sitting on the right side of the train in the direction of travel?

All help appreciated!

Can anyone advise also on booked Saturday workings? I'm thinking about doing Lancaster to Carlisle on this line as part of the Northern £10 offer and would prefer something not too shaky! Chances are it'd be the train that connects at Lancaster with the train from Heysham Port

Nothing to do with workings but I always try and do the line when the tide is high, far more exciting.
Make sure your on the left up, and right down.

Cumbrian Coast is either 156 or 153 these days, haven't heard of anything else popping up on it in a while. Train from Heysham should be of a Pacer variety.

Sorry, I meant train to Heysham Port (typing in a rush using free WiFi on XC before I had to leave it!)

156 is fine, though for the length of the journey, I'd prefer to avoid the 153 I think :P

@Meridian richard - Thanks - I will bear this in mind, though I can't really time things according to the tides so it'll just have to be as it comes :)

Dawlish at high tide is probably another interesting one too (assuming your Voyager doesn't stop dead in its tracks as a result of it )

Train to Heysham always used to be a 144 but there have been some 150s recently.

150's are booked weekdays but I think on Saturday it's booked a 3 car 144 as this is what I always seem to see on it.

To be honest, I looked at trying to squeeze in Heysham Port, but to say it is going to be difficult on this occasion is an understatement! Going to have to settle with catching that service as far as Lancaster and then connecting to Carlisle. The return from HHB comes into Lancaster too late to make the Carlisle connection

If you want to see the fells, sit on the left side heading north (right heading south) and the other side for the sea views. Note that currently Northern appear to have lost the bucket and sponge so the windows are generally quite dirty and will spoil your views - especially if you want to take photos from the train!

But they do have a chammy it would seem. Was at Leeds on Monday morning and there was a 158 with do not move signs and a cleaner going over the platform side external windows

144s are still booked for the Leeds - Morecambe workings, but 150s are appearing more frequently (but 144s still cover the majority of services from what I've heard).

i travelled the Cumbrian Coast as planned on Tuesday the unit was 156438 on the 1247 Carlisle to Barrow, the unit externally was filthy and the windows were grotty - no one window was clean, and it really spoilt the views. The best window i could find on the right hand side of the train with a table had white limescale down the middle of the window, amongst the dirt. Im quite shocked at how dirty Northern Rail are letting their units get lately. They advertise all these routes with beautiful scenery, but first the windows need to be clean!

I was led to believe Monday-Friday all Leeds-Morecambe trains are now 150s except the final service of the day, at least that is what TRUK say in the current issue.

Have to check on the Northern Railways forum and see what they're saying.

When I was over there for the Sellafield Flyer, the 156 I had from Carlisle was the same. It might depend on where the unit is stabled overnight - I don't think Barrow Carriage Sidings have a washer and it would also depend on how often units get moved (e.g. it could go onto a Carlisle - Newcastle working or get over to Manchester at some point, where there will be a washer available.
