I saw a rail grinder stabled at Pelaw on Friday/Saturday, then again when passing the depot on my way home from work tonight. What I wondered is do Metro have these vehicles sitting round idly at Gosforth most of the time, or are they hired in when needed? It can't be a regular job on a system that size can it?

I'm not sure about the grinder but the Tamper was specially made for the system, due to the slightly smaller loading gauge in the tunnels.

IIRC, Metro have in the past hired a grinder in from London Underground, although other arrangements may now be in place.

Metro do maintain a fleet of service vehicles, including the tamper, several battery locos, a fleet of ballast wagons, some flat-beds and an OHL works train.

There are also several road/rail vehicles used for smaller jobs.

Most road/rail excavators are hired in. Most of the staff are contractors for most projects.

Stobart Rail were doing a lot of work on the 23 day possession last year (shame they can't/don't directly employ people themselves).

Also noticed that Nexus are advertising for a Head of Renewals.
