Yes I know there is the Freedom of the North East but it covers a heck of an area & I wouldn't want to travel further than 2 hours from York.

Any cheaper alternatives with a reduced area centered around York ?

Thanks.

Yes but if I'm planning 4 day trips out from York I'd need 4 rangers & 4 returns wouldn't I ?

I'm currently on a North Country Rover and plan to do most of the lines over the 4 days.

Area is Leeds - Newcastle/ Preston - Carlisle Inc. Cumbrian coast, so possibly a bit far for you.

You could mix the South Pennines ranger with a round robin, but I can't remember the name of the one that covers York.

True, but then a Rover is supposed to be a ticket that is valid for at least 3 days. There are some exceptions where products are erroneously called Rovers when they are, in fact, Day Rangers (W Yorks Metro Day Rover springs to mind).

Apart from Rovers (or a combination of Day Rangers), there is a Season that acts almost like a Rover and isn't too expensive either. Cattal - Conisbrough 7Day Season is £50.20 and allows travel by most lines within this area: York-Harrogate-Leeds-Wakefield-Swinton-Doncaster-Selby-York. (York & Leeds are both Appropriate Routeing Points for Cattal, and in addition to mapped routes, the shortest route rule allows travel via Pontefract Baghill, Moorthorpe & Swinton).

OK, so the area is a lot smaller than a Rover area, but depending on your requirements it could be an option for someone who wants to be able to travel before 0845.

As well being a dam sight cheaper than a rover is without using a railcard.

For example the North Country Rover is £54.15 with a.railcard.

Freedom of The North East does cover a large area but most of it is within approximately 2 hours of York. Except Carlisle. And it does offer some pretty good round trip journeys eg York-Scarborough-Hull-York and York-Newcastle-Carlisle-Leeds-York. If you add a bus you could do York-Scarborough-Whitby-Middlesborough-York or York-Doncaster-Cleethorpes-Barton-Hull-York.

Or you could always stop travelling after 2 hours and turn around :D

Exactly just because it covers a large area dosnt mean you have to travel the whole of it - just do what you want. :)

Bus?? Wimp! Walk across the Humber bridge and pick up the train again at Hessle. Walking the bridge is definitely an experience!

That's what I would do too - it's quite bracing standing over the middle of the Humber - but I don't mind being well over 2 hours from York!

Change of plan I've booked a place in Thirsk from Sat 26th May for a week.

Travelling from Liverpool Lime St it appears that ticket splitting at Leeds saves me money, but no doubt you experts know more.

Perhaps there is s Rover that covers the journey to Thirsk & I could also use the additional journeys whilst I'm there as well as the return journey to Liverpool ?

Depends how many of those days you want to get out and about.

I know you already discounted the idea in the original thread, but the Freedom of North East is probably your best bet. That way, you could just book your tickets from Liverpool to Huddersfield or Leeds for your outward and return journey, and then use the rover ticket for the remainder of travel to and from Thirsk.

The 7 day rover is obviously much better value, so it also gives you a week of freedom to just do whatever you want within the large valid zone.

Yeah Freedom of North East is certainly good value, some of the distances might be daunting, but the speeds keep the time to 2 hours or less because you got the ECML!!!!!
