10,000 Bilbao fans in Manchester today. All mostly lost.

Then.... from nowhere...... a station announcement.

"Senor y senoras, passengeros por Old Trafford..." ....etc

Brilliant. Definately not her normal job, but it kept the Bilbao fans smiling. :D

Tranvia Metrolink de Manchester indeed!

Apart from the Eurostar, I don't think I've ever heard anything other than English or Welsh announced on the railways or on metros in the UK. ;)

Sure I have heard (doubtless prerecorded) announcements in Spanish, Ilatian and German on both Stensted and Gatwick Express in the past......

I know the Eurostar announcements at St Pancras are normally English and French; is Dutch ever used when referring to the officially bilingual Brussels though? "Platform zeven is trein nummer negen-één-vier-acht voor Kales, Rijsel en Brussel Zuid"?

Would have given the basques a good impression of Metrolink, until the Altrincham line was suspended due to points failure, and then a tram failed in the city centre.. :(

I don't remember hearing it, probably because native speakers of Dutch are very likely to understand English and most of the Flemish will also understand French.

The English/French native speaking train managers on Eurostar heading to Brussels do have a good go at announcing in Dutch, but it's not terribly easy to pronounce correctly!

Many UK airports used to be pretty much monolingual (i.e. English only) when it came to announcements as well, regardless of the flight destination. However, many have now bought an automated announcement system that solves the problem.

"Platform zeven is trein nummer negen-één-vier-acht voor Kales, Rijsel en Brussel Zuid"?

The use of "for" is interesting for the train destinations, that seems to be a feature of English (and its transport terminology) as I've only heard naar/nach/à (to) used in that context in other languages.

Although as nice a gesture as it was, it will have been lost on most of the Bilbao fans! Making an announcement in Basque would be like making one in Welsh for Wrexham fans!! Very few of the fans would actually speak it!!
