Hi all,
Whats the current update with the withdrawl of the A-stock of the met line? Are there many still left? Good chance of grabbing one?

Slowly but surely the S Stock are taking over. I was at Harrow the other day when all four trains in the station were S Stock - a vision of what it will be like. I've heard that the intention is to get all Met Line S Stock in service within the next 10 weeks. Remains to be seen whether that happens, but they want to get them run in before the Olympics.

A-Stock disappearing at a rate of 1 a week at Northwood sidings, though that may increase.

Does anyone know of any plans to preserve and A Stock unit? Would be a shame if no examples were preserved after 50 years of hard graft.

According to a poster on District Dave the two RAT's will remain capable of occasional passenger service for heritage purposes, potentially allowing outright preservation when they become redundant.

I haven't read that post on DDave's but I have seen a notice stating that the RAT's cannot carry passengers at this moment in time, as it hasn't been signed off as safe to carry since modifications. There is a plan to conduct tests on the pilot light etc to ensure it'd work properly.

Good to hear that they plan to carry out such tests, the refence i was talking about is in this thread: "...the maintenance regime has been written so that they remain capable of passenger service for occasional heritage use"

Does anyone know of any plans for an A stock final farewell similar to the London Midland 150 farewell? (I think they could get in a depot visit, as well as the rare side of the Watford triangle).

I've not heard anything, but I hope that a Farewell tour is organised. The one last year for the 1967 Stock was a nice day out, and covered Northumberland Park depot and the Victoria-Piccadilly connection at Finsbury Park.

Can the A-Stock go off the Met route at all? Can it go with passengers through Aldgate East and beyond? Obviously they did transfer along there when the ELL was Underground.

I believe they are cleared to work through to Upminster, as they were going there to use the wheel lathe at one point recently.

There was talk on a couple of forums about a possibile A stock tour but everything has gone quiet.

It might be good to do an A stock tour as part of the celebrations on the London Underground network in 2013

That would be fantastic. Obviously depends whether the RATs are re-certified for passenger use or whether a set is preserved by the LTM (IMO, it would be a travesty if one wasn't).

What about the south side of the Circle and the western branches of the District? Picadilly line- as far as Hounslow, and possibly Ealing-Rayners Lane? Hammersmith?

I think the transport museum are talking to London Underground about preserving a A stock unit and I hope perhaps in the future a some examples of the C & D stock units

There is a daily passenger service that does the Watford North Curve early in the morning - am sure someone here can come up with the times for it.

I think it was something like 05:47 in the morning according to a thread I read a few months ago although I cannot find the link.

I've heard they should be gone by the Olympics.

That's a step up then - I thought the plan was late summer / early autumn based on the current production rate? I must go and look at District Dave's for an update...

According to District Dave's there's a chance that a few will be retained for peak hour only workings through August.

In traffic today ( not exhaustive ):

5198 + 5120
5146 + 5020
5082 + 5230
5016 + 5108
5022 + 5152
5106 + 5094
5118 + 5096
5122 + 5044
5116 + 5134
5232 + 5102
5052 + 5194
5212 + 5046
5014 + 5182
5112 + 5218
5114 + 5168
5150 + 5056

Since my last trip out at least three more "snake" stock ( nickname I was told today by a member of station staff! ) have entered service as I collected 21065/6, 21071/2 and 21073/4 for haulage.

Moving around at Neasden depot was 21095/6.

Well if my memory serves me right, the A Stock can go as far as south as Embankment via either Rayners Lane or Edgware Road. Mansion House can be done via Aldgate. I think Hammersmith (Metropolitan) is also possible.

A Stock can run as follows:

All locations on the Met
Baker St - Edgware Road
Rayners Lane - Barons Court siding
Acton Town - Northfields Depot
Ealing Common - Ealing Broadway
Liverpool St - Aldgate East

It can and has visited Upminster depot under special arrangements during engineering hours, via King's Cross and Whitechapel.

It is not permitted to run anywhere else on the network at present.

5018+6018+6019+5019 were collected from Northwood for scrap at the beginning of last week (I assume that there was another set there as well on the Monday, as they usually go as 8-car sets - but I wasn't about on Monday).

Later in the week 5076+6076+6077+5077 and 5192+6192+6193+5193 were taken to Northwood and then away, courtesy of Allelys.

This week 5020+6020+6021+5021 are in the process of being removed and 5146+6146+6147+5147 are awaiting their turn.

I presume set 5020 has just been withdrawn in the past few days as I travelled in that (partnered with 5153) on a Watford service last Monday.

Looking at my list a few posts above, 5020 + 5146 were in traffic as a pair as recently as Friday, five days ago. If by "already being removed" you mean they are in Northwood siding, they must have run as train 717 on Monday, meaning Friday would have been their last day in traffic.

Looking at my notes for Friday, I actually rode them that day!
