I don't think there's even anywhere that'd be a close second

(unless there's argument about "mainline, I suppose)

Tyndrum: 167

I can think of one that slots in at #4 on this list - Winnersh (7,939). Possibly the smallest settlement in the country to have more than one electrified station, although I am more than happy to be corrected on this. Remember also that Winnersh Triangle is relatively recent! :p

Fishguard, 5,043, will beat Winnersh in a couple of months' time.

Smaller than Winnersh, and with not two but three electrified stations (Upper Warlingham being the one that doesn't include its name) is....Whyteleafe. population of 2,200 (according to Wiki - who knows what boundaries they used)

And despite being semi-rural, that's only just over the boundary from Greater London!

6548 for Denham, with its lovely Golf Club :)

I think if its inside the M25 then it shouldnt count. You can walk to the border with London proper from Denham in a few minutes. ;)

Greenock deserves a mention in this thread though. Population 45,000 and it has nine railway stations within its borders.

This as always comes down to the definition of population of an area. Tyndrum is postally FK20 and therefore comes under Crianlarich, the inclusion of which probably more than doubles the population as well as adding a third station.

Having just had a look at a map, they are clearly separate settlements.

Lelant and Lelant Saltings?

Population 761 in 2001

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/Lelant/#Census

Doesn't beat Tyndrum (167) but I should think easily beats Kiveton.

Just realised the thread said 'mainline' stations, but who defines a 'mainline'? In that case what about Newark Castle and Northgate (25 376)?

Ah! The 2001 census when I was 1 of the 761. It's much bigger now as the village has grown a fair bit since 2001 and we may be loosing the Saltings station as the Park and Ride is to be moved to a larger site at St.Erth! The now request stop Lelant station is more central to the village than the Saltings station. Anyway as you said, the thread is about mainline rather than branch line stations. Maybe an idea for a new thread?

I think 'mainline' is being used here as in on the NR network, it could be argued both Tyndrum stations are on branchlines.

I did say 'mainline' in regards to it being a national rail station as opposed to metro. tramway, light rail. I should have been a bit more specific initially.

Hartford in Cheshire is a fairly rural backwater with two rail stations. Hartford itself on the WCML and Greenbank on the Mid Cheshire Line. I doubt it comes close to "least populated", but it's hardly a population centre either.

I still don't know why there isn't just a single interchange station where the two lines cross...
