Basically, what were the codes for past TOCs? The only ones I can find reference to are SL (Silverlink), ML (Midland Mainline) and CT (Central).

Although I'm kind of beginning to suspect they were only introduced in early-ish 2007; this explains why I can't find any codes for TOCs which closed in 2006 or earlier, and why East Coast and Greater Anglia are still stuck with GR for GNER and LE for London Eastern Railway (the Sunday name of One).

The codes definitely predate 2007.

NW for North Western Trains/First North Western.
WW for Wales & West
AN for Arriva Trains Northern (I think)

I think the codes are largely done by franchise, LE is Greater Anglia as it has been for NXEA, one (etc..)

Also, was Virgin West Coast always VT?

And how come Southern and c2c's codes don't reflect the names they had at the start of the franchise?

From what I can find in the 1999 timetables I have that haven't been mentioned:

Connex - CX
LTS - LS
First Great Eastern - GE
Thames Trains - TT
WAGN - WN

Last ones :P, what was SCT before they changed their name to Southern (presumably SC)? And did FGW Link use TT or GW?

I notice that there does seem to be a definite point where it was decided not to change the codes anymore unless a franchise was redrawn.

They were TT according to the May-Dec 2004 timetable; I don't have the other timetables from the 2004-6 era to hand to check whether it ever used anything different before being merged in 2006.

It'll be unfortunate if a different franchisee is appointed for ICWC then!

I had the impression that they were just not changed for short term or caretaker franchises, although now I think about it NXEC operating as GR messes that up!

Also notice that One had to go with an abbreviation of their legal name (LE, not ON or OR), whereas London Midland got to abbreviate their trading name (officially they're still the London and Birmingham Railway).

Admittedly one of those companies has a well-thought-out and descriptive trade name, and one had a corporate branding disaster...
