A friend told me about this so I just went and investigated at my local station.
It's now possible to "buy from another station" from certain Southern TVMs. Just fiddled about with it. The icon appears at the bottom of the screen alongside the "back," "people," "railcards" buttons. It asks for your origin station, then destination station, then as per normal procedure thereafter.
Although it's not useful for me at present, I wonder what the reasoning behind this is. A lot of people are going to have one less excuse for being ticketless now, but at the same time I can see the fraud potential in it. If the CCTV is up to scratch then there may well be quite a few easy Section 5 convictions for fare evasion once people get to grips with it.
