A friend told me about this so I just went and investigated at my local station.

It's now possible to "buy from another station" from certain Southern TVMs. Just fiddled about with it. The icon appears at the bottom of the screen alongside the "back," "people," "railcards" buttons. It asks for your origin station, then destination station, then as per normal procedure thereafter.

Although it's not useful for me at present, I wonder what the reasoning behind this is. A lot of people are going to have one less excuse for being ticketless now, but at the same time I can see the fraud potential in it. If the CCTV is up to scratch then there may well be quite a few easy Section 5 convictions for fare evasion once people get to grips with it.

They've been able to do this for a while now, and iirc you can only select from a few stations.

This is good news, I hope a similar thing may roll out on SWT TVM's at some point, as it's very useful to choose a different origin! In my role this would help me in making sure someone without a ticket has paid for their whole journey especially if they are going onward rather than just buying a ticket from where they were challenged! I can see how it could be abused though, but that's a good case of onboard checks on trains and barriers at stations!

This was discussed a while back, see this [thread=57754]thread[/thread] - There was an article in the January edition of the Go Southern magazine IIRC.

Would be a great feature to roll out, though if it is in place you need at least two machines at the station: I wouldn't want to get stuck behind a railuk forum user buying five tickets from the machine for one journey :D

Nope - at the one I used, I was able to bring up my Midland Mainline splits as far north as Sheffield and also a single from Cherry Tree to Peartree.

Don't think there are any within the catchment area of the humble suburb I live in. Pity TVMs don't do Priv tickets :p

Aye, it would be so nice to have, but then again how many people without one are just going to chance buying one and not getting caught?

The same people who would buy a ticket for the very start and end of the journey and nothing in between probably.

RJ - As said before, there's a very good reason that priv tickets are NOT sold at TVMs, it's bad enough that people use them to buy child tickets (when they're 16+) or railcard discounted tickets when they don't hold one!

Most Southern staff and Neighbourhood Officers are very rigorous at checking Railcard discounts (when they actually check your ticket(s)), at least, so I'm assuming they would be just as thorough with the task of checking any other discounts and zonal fares.

It appeared last time I looked at Rye that the buy from another station facility had been withdrawn. I havent travelled from there recently because of the Marshlink Blockade I'll try to check again next weekend.

The best solution to that would be for all PRIV cards and railcards to be issued as smartcards which would be required to unlock the TVM to allow issue of discounted tickets. That would of course require all TVMs to hava a smart card reader.

As far as U16 verification goes, until there is a requirement for people to carry a national ID card then it is always going to be an open invitation for fare evaders.

Try having one at your booking office window ;)

Something I'd like to know is if these TVMs accept cash, or just cards.

Certainly the ones at Rye that used to be enabled for any-origin purchasing allow both cash & card sales, they're just ordinary S&B TVMs :)

or railcard discounted tickets when they don't hold one!

Done some northern TVM's come up with a 'Cheaper Ticket Available sign, and then it links to a railcard discount?

Or just mag-swipe the railcard itself - or even OCR on the front.

Certainly one I have seen prompts "cheaper ticket available" for WYPTE ENCTS fares (half fare) so surely a good defence for people.

In the case of SWT and the joke they call their machines a start would be to at least have all destination stations on them and then all ticket types rather than just what SWT call "popular" which often are otherwise known as "more expensive than the cheapest available by quite a margin". They promise upgrades when queried on this but have still yet to deliver. Given other companies manage it it's not impossible yet it's not in SWT's interests as with the current machines they make more money. So I won't hold my breath on SWT adding the Southern functionality.

Sorry for the slight bump, however is anyone aware of any stations within the London fare zones 1-6 where this is enabled?

Cheers,

Last week at Epsom Downs' TVM I was able to buy tickets from anywhere to anywhere. It's a Southern station and with ease I got fares for Blackburn-Preston.

At Arnside you can check how to get to anywhere on a TVM and buy tickets to anywhere, at least it was last time I checked.

Is there anyone reading this in the area who can check if this is definitely true please? Thanks.

Could anyone indeed confirm it actually has a ticket machine please? I can't see one there or at Grange-over-Sands, but they do exist at Ulverston and Barrow.

If there is then TOD is certainly not available from it; not showing up on Stations Made 'Easy' either.

I've searched every unstaffed TPE station and can't find one with a TVM.

Edit - Before anyone says anything, there's less than ten of them, so it is possible I checked it in that time.
