I just thought I'd pop along and give anyone who was wondering what I'm doing an update. I'm posting here because chat seems to have largely dried up over at train-sim.

Still can't give a completion date but I feel the route is nearing the end now. progress has been held up by the fact that standards within BVE keep on increasing and thus i've been improving the standards of my route to keep up. I am also spending most of my time developing bits of software to help out with the routes construction (these need to be done before i can complete the route) The route has been converted to run in BVE V4 which contains prototypical Signalling for the routes (sadly flashing yellows aren't yet possible within BVE). This includes both LED and the older lamp style working shunt signals. The route will contain track with 3D sleepers throughout with the possible exception of places with a high framerate demand. This is a first for BVE, and possibly any sim ever seen. Prototypical 86m switches are to be used at Colton Junction and a few other locations. Recently, older objects have been given a revamp to make them look more prototypical or are in the process of being optimised to run more efficiently and doncaster works has been rebuilt. The catenery in places has been taken out and replaced with better looking objects. in some cases textures have been upgraded on more than one occasion! I have tried to make the overhead wiring as true to real life as possible. Every overlap in the right place etc...

Attention will also be given to sundry lineside fixtures (signs, lineside telephones etc)

As for doncaster Marshgate junction this is currently being rebuilt again for about the 5th time as more information has come to light and standards increased in trackwork and catenery, I estimate this to be the 3rd most difficult location in terms of both track and catenery on the entire route to model (I really should have started with an easier section, eh? :) )

I can confirm at least 2 route variations will be available, being 2002 and present day as some minor changes occured. If time permits a 1980s version will be produced (as i feel i now have enough information to do this) as well as consideration being given to sunset and night time versions. Again, if time permits I may produce a freight variation possibly running out of holgate sidings.

Sadly no screenshots are available yet as In most locations I don't consider the scene to be complete but hopefully i should be able to rustle something up.

One thing that would be of help is if anyone has any photos north of york especially the skelton junction area and northern approaches to york and best of all any photos of the York- Selby line before it shut in 1983, (i've found one or two on the net after 4 years of research), key locations being

  • chaloners whin jn
  • bishopsthorpe
  • naburn swing bridge
  • escrick
  • ricall and associated level crossings
  • barlby junction
  • selby south junctions
  • Any signal diagrams from the late 60s to 1989

cheers

Sounds good; the idea of 3d sleepers is something I've thought about but never implemented because of frame rate concerns - be interested to see how it looks (any screenies of the track?).

sorry, not as of yet, as i'm going to wait till i have other scenic elements in place before releasing any screenies. there's also a slight adjustment or two i might want to make with my current track.

and as for traction, there currently isn't a 91 available for BVE V4 although technically it should be a DVT. I might be able to include a virgin 47 diagram time permitting.

Zane, whats with the should?!
You mean Tom ;) The reason he said "should" is that GNER use the 91s on the country end and the DVT on the London end of their services and because this route is southbound it would be more prototypical to use the DVT. Not that a 91 couldn't be used though!

I'm quite confident that he meant Zane, if you look at the posts.

RE. 3D sleepers-
I'm sure someone posted something like this on TS at some stage. As I recall, the problem wasn't so much framerate as odd pointwork/ curve requirements?
I wouldn't imagine it'll have that much of an impact on FPS really- I would assume that BVE will only render the object in question a single time before placing it as appropriate on the screen, and this wouldn't actually use that much power, as opposed to rendering for example a different trackside object with the same number of polys per section.

Just for reference, my largest Tamar Bridge object runs to 258 faces, and this is in a relatively densely populated area (4 of them in use, plus bridge pillars, plus a station & various bridges/ buildings), and the FPS effect I've seen is very minimal. Admittedly, its only for a short section & not all the way, but it may be of use.

Cheers
