THE STATION NAMES HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT (and to protect affordable train travel from ATOC lurkers).

Hypothetical question:

Denton is only served by trains on Fridays. Supposing there was a fare anomaly making it cheaper to buy a Day Return to Denton but stop short at say Stockport. Would there be any problem (a) buying and (b) using such a ticket on another day of the week? The online booking engines don't seem to be able to issue a ticket for days when trains aren't running so it would have to be bought at a station or on train.

I don't think there would be any big issues with buying a return at a station, you might get some funny looks though.

The main concern would be break of journey rules which may prevent it's use. You'd have to check the ticket type and restriction code as appropriate (or get a member of staff to do so).

So in the hypothetical example are you saying that, for instance, Macclesfield to Denton would be cheaper than Macclesfield to Stockport?

I imagine some booking office staff may be more willing to sell you the ticket than others.

Yes, exactly like that. The ticket I have in mind is a SDR Anytime Day Return. That is OK for break of journey on the outbound and return legs, isn't it?

Yes, SDRs have no restrictions on time or BoJ.

G'day

In this hypothetical situation is it safe to assume that if you miss the Fridays only train, the ticket would still be valid on the next available service. ie : the following Fridays train?

Cheers

If you miss the train, the ticket would still expire as normal.

If a train you are on is delayed and the connection is missed, or a train is cancelled, the TOC will likely arrange a taxi rather than six nights in a hotel.

Surely it would be seven nights in a hotel?

Interesting. Let's suppose there is a day return Macclesfield-Denton. Can the return journey be the week after? Or must one have only 20 seconds in Denton?

All sorts of questions spring to mind, like how does one use a CDR from Denton to Reddish South (Takes 1 week to do a single journey)?, or what point is a 7 day season where there is no service?

How is it possible to use an ECD (Evening return) Stockport to Denton - you can't even make it one way, let alone return!

Well for a start the return journey would be Denton-Stalybridge-Manchester-Macclesfield. Would that even be a permitted route?

I don't think there is any clause in the T&Cs allowing the return part of a day return to be used a week later in such circumstances. The service is advertised (very poorly) as one per week in the northbound direction only.

It must be, because it is the shortest route with a regular service.
I agree.

Also ATOC informed a forum member that the shortest route can be different in different directions. However according to an informed source, this isn't reflected in the data they use. Also ATOC tell us publicly to use mileages to the nearest quarter of a mile from the NRT, but again the data they use is different. But this should, of course, be of no surprise. It appears that some ATOC staff do not have a clue what a different department in ATOC is up to!

That's nearly as bizarre as the Off Peak single from Euston - Denton not been valid at all!

PS. On checking this ticket out on www.eastcoast.co.uk - It's advertising the Northern service from Stockport as having first class!
