Hey all. I've got an interview in Manchester on the 27th. Need to be there for 11, but aiming to get there for 10 just to give myself some time. The anytime return is £54.80 with my railcard, is there any way of getting this price down a bit? Anywhere I should be looking at splitting?

Thanks :)

Two questions. First, what kind of RC have you got (I assume a YP)? And secondly, is a Day Return acceptable?

Too tired to bother with Advances

Splitting at Stafford would be a good start.

COV - STA + YP = £10.15 (be sure to buy this before hand, otherwise the 1000 restriction on the YP will kicking resulting in a fare of £12)
STA - MAN + YP = £14.40

Both of these are SDRs. I agree that arriving at MAN at 1000 is sensible, which means you won't be able to use a CDR into MAN.

Ok cool, that's a lot cheaper! :D

Regarding the 10AM railcard rule, would the ticket still be fine to travel on before then if I buy it online? :/

No reason why not. The Railcard itself is always valid; it is only the pricing involved (in that fares below £12 are automatically set to £12) that is different.

You could buy online (obviously allowing enough time to do so, so the day before would be sensible), or at the station off-peak on an earlier date.

You would probably have to provide proof of purchase first if not done in the same transaction, but yes. Any old service to Birmingham New Street would do (you could get a reservation on a VT service if you wanted to), and then on the 0831 XC service to MAN on which a reservation would be recommended (and believe me on this - I've been on it from end-to-end enough!).

On the return leg the same would be true (well, the times wouldn't).

Sorry, this advice is incorrect. The 16-25 Railcard Terms & Conditions are clear that the £12 minimum fare applies for journeys made at or before 10am Monday to Friday excluding Advance Fares. The ticket purchase time is irrelevant.

Please also note that the train will have to stop at Stafford in both directions. The 0831 from BHM that Ivo mentions does. All of the Manchester - Bournemouth services do stop at Stafford, but not all of the Manchester - Bristol ones.

Well that's a first! Which ones? I thought all XC services stopped at Stafford - at least on weekdays.

Sorry, my mistake. I had always assumed it was permitted (although this was partly because I had never been in that situation).

Thank you for pointing out the error.

There was one timetable where many of the MAN-BRI didn't stop at Stafford (or Macclesfield). Indeed I've been on a 1631 which was WVH, SOT, MAN only.
Having just checked a couple of these online, it looks like the Stafford stops have been reinstated - I was surprised they were ever taken away given the revenue opportunities and the amount of slack in the pathings.

If you can manage to only use Virgin trains, an off-peak ticket is valid any time.

You'd have to trust the 4min connection (P6 over bridge to P5) at Crewe for this:
0742 COV-BHM 0808 (from Euston)
0820 BHM-CRE 0907 (to Edinburgh)
0911 CRE-MAN 0949 (from Euston)

You may want to get a plusbus for Coventry if you need to get the bus. I've used them in peak times before

You are very, very unlikely to get that connection. The xx:20 VT service from Birmingham is almost always a few minutes late, and 9/10 it arrives on P11 - so it's P11 to P5.

IIRC up to December 2008 there were none, then the Bournemouth stops were introduced. In 2009 the Bristols followed, however, only certain ones. This was changed in 2010 to almost all, as it remains today. IIRC there's only 2tpd each way that don't call, but I forget their times, and this may have changed in December 2011.

I'm usually on Crewe if I'm going to London between those times - can't say I've ever noticed the former being constantly late.

Whenever I travel from Birmingham to Crewe on that service, it is always late by at least a minute. Having said that, the xx.11 to MAN always seems to be late by a minute or two also.

I have done the +4 (both were late by 2 minutes so it is doable) and i must admit i am not the fittest of people! (Being from P11 -----> P5)
