I suppose there's a slim chance that the on-train crew will find it rather than a chancer. I was sure I'd put it in my jacket pocket but it must have slipped out when I was putting it on.
I was on the 1833 KGX to Bradford - what's the procedure for asking East Coast if it was found?

No longer here
Call them on 08457 225 333, or ask in person at any of their stations.

Don't write or email, it'll take days to be answered.

Thanks for the prompt replies - will give them a call now. It still rings if I call it which means it's still on with the SIM in it.

EDIT: Just called them and spoke to a very helpful young lady. If it does turn up it will be at Leeds tomorrow which is the nearest office to Bradford.

You might be in luck - I left my phone on a train last year and a passenger handed it into the guard. Have faith! Or send a text to your phone offering a reward (you never know).

Did you get your phone back?

Sorry to say the story ended badly. No sign of the phone in Lost Property and I remembered too late it was on "auto top-up" so whoever found it stung me for another £40 before I could shut it down.
Thanks for all the tips here though - it's nice to see somebody found an honest passenger/staff member.

It does happen... I found a flat Blackberry* wedged down the side of a seat with a valid ticket two days old once. Handed it in at Newport LP.

*As in it had no juice

Found a Blackberry in the street once. Locked but owner's details were on the screen. Looked up the company and called and left a message to say if I didn't hear from them in 24h it would be at the local police station (I did end up taking it there).

Also found a very valuable London season ticket under a train seat on a BHM-WVH service, with a business card in it. Called the number on it and got the ticket back to its owner the next day before he left for London.

Good to hear there are some decent people out there. I found some kind of phone on a train, took it home and contacted some numbers in it.

I don't think I'd hand something like a phone in.

Re the OP, and £40 of credit being used, surely your network can give you a call log from the phone (or give to police)?

Two years ago I was on a northern service out of Manchester and as our pacer broke down at the platform we were to told to get on a replacement train. I noticed a phone on the floor as I walked down the carriage and immediately shouted down the train. Someone claimed the phone and thanked me and I thought he was the true owner as he had sat not far by. On the replacement train I heard someone tell the guard they had lost a phone - with the same description. I told both the guard and true owner what happened. It turned out the first claimant was still on the train and denied to the guard that he claimed the phone - despite me standing nearby. The quick thinking guard had already stored the number on his own mobile and rang it. Amazingly the chancer had not turned it off and it rang from his pocket - he gently took it out, gave it back and then continued reading his newspaper. The journey then continued as normal.

I've handed in a few phones, or if they were on and unlocked - arranged the return (or should I say collection by them!) directly by doing a bit of investigating (looking for 'home' or 'parents' or even just looking at the last dialled numbers).

I also had my own BlackBerry found, with FCC calling me to say they had it. £10 or £15 later, I had the phone back when I was sure it would be gone forever (and, I might add, I didn't know where I'd lost it). A top tip; if you can set your phone to show a message when switched on, even when locked, do it.. that's how FCC got my number from the lock screen and called me.

Given how many mobiles were shown on 'The Tube' at the LU Lost Property office, I guess there are an awful lot of honest people out there. It's a real shame it didn't work out for you this time.

I wonder what the ratio is between those handed in to those not? It is also quite suprising the amount of phones they had in their storage area that hadn't been claimed.

Sorry, what do you mean? If you couldn't locate the owner, what would you do with the phone?

Having said that, it's getting harder to hand things into Police Stations because the opening hours are so restricted or they've shut!

Probably ended up in the big bag of lost phones at Birmingham Central Police Station as shown on Crime & Punishment last week.

Wasn't much more I could do and I didn't want it sitting on my desk forever.

I was unable to hand in lost property to the police the last few times I asked. At King's Cross you are supposed to give it to the left luggage company. The police clearly don't want to know and when I found a credit card by platform 8, the officer took it from me and folded it in half and threw it away.

Probably the best thing to do with a found credit card is to destroy it. Any sane person who realises one has been lost is going to cancel it immediately so it is unlikely to be of any further use to the legitimate owner.
