Hello I want to travel tomorrow (Sunday) London to Leicester day return and have Network RC, zone 1-6 Travelcard on Oyster.

The through fare is £53.50

With splitting, I get this:

Elstree to Bedford Network discount, £11.15
Bedford to Market H, £16.20
Market H to Leicester, £9.10

Total £36.45

Is the Elstree to Bedford ticket FCC only?
Can anyone improve on these splits?
Will St Pancras sell the above without a battle?
Thanks

Elstree to Bedford is any permitted (you could change onto EMT at one of the Lutons if desired so it has to be)

You shouldnt have a problem at the main (EMT-operated) ticket office at St Pancras - the smaller FCC one is one to avoid, however!

Please note in the past I have been told by the St Pancras EMT Station Supervisor, Lionel Williamson, that his company "does not accept Oyster". This is obviously incorrect, as Oyster is a medium and not a product, and the combination of tickets would be entirely acceptable in line with NRCoC condition 19(c).

It is also thought that EMT are trying to get rid of the aforementioned condition. That said, the ticket office staff may not have the same prejudices as their management and might (or should) sell the ticket without question.

Note further that an Oyster card will not operate the platforms 1-4 barriers at St Pancras (I tried with my Z12 Oyster season this morning, in fact!)

There are standalone Oyster readers off to the left of the platform 1-4 barriers. The barriers themselves only accept ITSO, I think.

Those readers are only available for people travelling on FCC on evenings and weekwnds from Platform 4.

Is Oyster not valid on EMT because there trains do not stop within the zones? 19b NRCoC

Oyster PAYG isn't for that reason but there is no reason why a season ticket on Oyster shouldn't be valid under conditions 9 [electronic tickets] and 19c [splitting with a season]

I used to use my Zone 1-2 on Oyster without any issues whatsoever at least twice a week on EMT in and out of St Pancras although I've ditched this in favour of a cheapo season ticket with a stupid amount of validity. There's no reason why one should have trouble with staff at the station. Show them the Boundary Zone ticket and they should let you be on your way. Staff on board have also never troubled me for using a Zone 1-2 or 2-3 Travelcard.

Welcome to the forum :)

Condition 19c applies in this case.

Oyster is a medium (as opposed to paper!), not a product. Oyster PAYG is a product but it is not being used in this case.

If you are interested in this issue, there are many threads on this forum that may interest you, as it does crop up quite regularly! You can try our search feature (and narrow down the search by choosing keyword(s)) or use a Google search specifying site:railforums.co.uk

Another site that may interest you is www.virgintrains.org.uk, and if EMT continue to act in contravention of the NRCoC then perhaps someone may consider setting up a similar site for EMT.

Thanks for your help with this. In the end I bought a bz6 to Bedford ticket at a non-EMT station to help ensure no problems at St P. The barriers were open and the guard checked all tickets at the platform entrance. He asked if my Oyster had season on it, I confirmed it did and he was happy with this.

So I didn't need to rely on 19c due to the Sunday service stopping everywhere.

what's strange is that my bz6 to Bedford ticket says via Bletchley.

Strictly speaking that ticket should not have been sold under "impartial retailing" as the Any Permitted ticket is exactly the same price and has the same restriction.

If that's true then it makes no difference as the validity is the same. Boundary Zone fares to Bedford are a hotbed for anomalies anyway. Me being me, I'd split at ELS and SAC to save money.

I've bought splits at St Pancras once. When I do so, I already have a document on my laptop with the cheapest possible splits (linear splits on the MML is so last semester - the big savings are in the unexpected Routeing Guide anomalies :p) and print off the relevant template to hand to the clerk. Each line has Origin -> Destination -> Type -> Railcard used -> Price. So it's almost a wordless transaction. I will avoid doing it at St Pancras however as last time the clerk was a bit too impressed with my handiwork and these things have a habit of finding their way back to the HQ.
