Who is eligible for this? Is it just TOC employees or may up Network Rail be granted it?

Thanks in advance

Network Rail only get 'Priv' Discount on season tickets to/from work, staff employed before privatisation receive Priv Travel though.

Some staff complain as you can't get Priv discount on certain tickets. In many cases, it will probably be cheaper not using Priv and getting advances.

... and don't forget that this is classed as a benefit, so is taxed as well.

Nearly cheaper to get an Off-Peak Return in some cases!

Too true, a PRIV in many cases is not a Privilege.

But for those of us who are TOCNE, we can't really moan as any travel benefits are a bonus. Something is always better than nothing.

Some LUL staff have PTAC, me for instance. I'm a retired LUL employee. Talking of taxation
When I joined LUL we were taxed on our free travel on LT services. However this I believe was challenged in the courts as it was part of the job to travel on trains.

No nearly about it....

London Terminals - Manchester Airport Anytime Return is £300.00, which goes down to £75.00 PRIV.

Off-Peak Return is £74.20...

Cheers,

Barry

So they should do what I do and do their homework on their tickets then! I'm quite proud to be doing my regular MML trip of up to 150 miles, for less than the cheapest Advance ticket with a Railcard discount which costs £9.something. I endeavour to get my fare down to less than £7 :p. The bit north of Bedford can be done for peanuts (despite the expensive through fares) it's just between there and London which is inordinately expensive!

I had a feeling there was some that are, but I kept thinking it was Manchester Stns (which is slightly cheaper on priv) for some reason.

Network Rail sold their PRIV benifits for a grand a few years ago

No they didn't, Railtrack (which became Network Rail) were never entitled to privilege travel, the only employees who received it would be ex-BR ones who were classified as 'safeguarded' for travel benefits.

A lot of people dont have the time nor the effort to ggo into such detail and research such a journey. To me(and probably only to me so dont go off on one) that sounds mightily obsessive and anal.. But thats only my opinion.

The Priv is only worth it for me when i go up to Newcastle for a game as I love the flexibility of travelling when ever i want.

I'm a student in full time education. I have a need to travel 300 miles per week. I've got better things to spend my money on than expensive train tickets every week so don't see why I should pay more than I need to.

Straying slightly if I may, I was talking to a friend the other day and it appears they get first class free travel which is different to a first class PRIV so I assume that 'first class free travel' does exactly what it says on the tin on a national basis, bearing in mind they are ex-BR?

Back in the day this was a benefit to senior BR management.

And their partners.

My wife spent an interesting journey chatting to someone who was a widow of an Ex-BR manager.

Sounds like she wasn't so well off and liked to spend time travelling all over 1st class - and snacking in 1st class lounges.

Seems as if EC managers also get free first class travel, judging by the amount of them I see in 1st when I'm there.

On their own services? Most staff above a certain grade have first class travel facilities with their own employer's services. Virgin also give those with ten years' service, regardless of grade, unlimited first class travel on Virgin Trains.

That is a very nice gesture I must say.

Yes, should have put that. Must be a grade thing as a job vacancy I saw last year only gave free standard class travel for EC.

Greater Anglia honour those who do not go sick the previous year free weekend 1st class travel. Managers get unlimited as do drivers with 25yrs service although this is not whilst on duty, officially ;)

Indeed. It's usually senior management and executive/board level chaps and chapesses who benefit. "Coal face" staff will have standard class benefits (except the notable exception of Virgin, as I said, where you can get people like on-board staff with ten years' service with first class facilities on Virgin only). I am sure at least one other TOC will have something similar to Virgin in place.
