37p on a packet of fags - daylight robbery <D

Easy target I suppose, ah well I shall have to continue my trips around Europe in search of more liberally enlightened regimes with regard to tobacco taxation :p

Current stock 1000 Bensons and 800 Dunhill International will tide me over for a week or so

Are you a member of the UK parliament (vague knowledge of economics useful but not necessary)?

I wish I was a Member of Parliament or indeed Chancellor - I would have aboloished excise duty on Tobacco from midnight tonight.

When Eleven Billion Pounds disappeared from the tax chest and an alternative source of funding had to be found all the whingeing "ash brigade" may have sat down and thought perhaps those "smoking suckers" were not quite such bad chaps after all :p

Ok we save a few billion on the NHS but as they will be living longer a lot of that will be negated by the extra benefits and pensions they will now be able to collect.

As for the pensioners moaning about their tax allowances being curbed , I would have removed the differential immediately instead of gradually. If they get enough to pay tax they are not poor. While were at it lets make them pay 50p for each bus journey and free up the bus service for the workers

Maybe you should try this. ;)

Though according to the latest figures from Sky News, 78% of people say they will be better off thanks to the new budget. GSK have already announced their intention to create 1,000 new jobs thanks to the change in tax regulations.

All in all, with the exception of the 'Granny Tax', I think Mr Osborne did a good job.

In the morning Monday to Friday peak period, up to 0930, those with the over 60 NCT pass are obliged to pay FULL FARE on the buses in this area.

Are you proposing that they only pay 50p at such times ?

The new basic state pension that will come into effect in April 2012 is £107.45 per week, which equates to £5,587.40 per annum. Does this sound that this figure is too much in your eyes and should be reduced ?

As tax allowance is going up I'd do well out of it. Especially after a £900 pay rise!

Yes, apparently I'm better off. Not sure my parents are though! And they voted Tory too!

I support a rise in the taxation of cigarettes. I have nothing against smokers - but I have everything against cigarettes themselves.

I do not support a decrease in income tax for the very rich.

Although that extra £30 (approx) a month will go on inflated prices of petrol, food etc, so realistically worse off i think

That will depend on any wage rises too though.

Do you really think this was decided overnight? It's been in the pipeline for a long time.l

I do not support a decrease in income tax for the very rich.

I do think it's unfair that someone earning £1.5m will only be paying 5% more tax (45%) than someone earning a very average £35000 (40%), but it's the higher rate tax that's too high and not the additional rate tax.

The top 1% of earners in this country pay a huge proportion of overall income tax. If we started asking for, say, 70p of every £1 they earned, in what way to they be encouraged to earn more money (and pay more income tax!)? The government has to strike a balance.

5% more though will be quite a considerable figure.
40% of £35000 being £14000
45% of 1.5mill being £675000 50% being £750000, so an extra £75000 that 5% will equate to

What you have to remember about people in the higher rate tax bracket is that they are able to afford to hire expensive accountants who can make sure they don't pay their fair share

As I understand it, its only charged VAT when its hot. Just heat your lunch up when you get back to the office!

If they don't pay 50p in the pound they're not going to pay 45p in the pound. Osbourne had to get rid of this though else his buddies in the media won't support him in the next election. We're almost as bad as the Americans for political lobbying and vote buying.

You'd do well to remember that the tax threshold is a Lib Dem policy and one of their demands from the coalition. If Osbourne could get away with not having it he would without second thought.

I'm yet to see a Tory policy that benefits the poor at the expense of the rich.

And there you fail to understand the essence of the life saving service offered by Greggs. Many of us in the north can not afford this fancy food warming equipment you speak of so must buy our pastry wrapped meat products pre heated at the source of purchase.

Typical Tories - the tax rise doesn’t affect those fancy cockneys with their microwaves and their cookers and their jobs.

As i understand it the tax only applies when taking away, so eat your pasty inside the shop!

Spot on.

A lot of people are naively assuming that the rich (who reduced their salary in favour of other "perks" or found complicated ways to hide their true income) will suddenly be falling over themselves to pay a 45% tax rate.

The truth is that we could have a 1% tax rate and those rich enough would still be employing advisers to dodge it.

The "if you reduce tax rates then people will work harder and pay more tax so that the government gets *more* income" trick was tried thirty years ago - it didn't work then, it won't work now.

Quite liking the idea of 'eat in' maybe there is a reason Cooplands have been busy opening cafes!

I remember when the 50% tax rate was introduced - it was only a temporary measure and wouldnt be in place for long...... But you know dont worry about remembering that statement from Alistair Darling as that wont fit into the Tory bashing.

And nothing abotu the 24 million other people who will also be paying less tax - thats a good thing is it not?

Also it was quite a smart move for him to do it now - still a couple of years away from an election and it will all be forgotten about and the main thing on the agenda will be if growth has continued and more people are getting jobs and earning a decent crust for themselves.

Which is really what most people should be focusing on - helping the unemployed back to work.

Oh yeah and greggs dont do hot food anyway - its still warm from when they take it out and put it under the lights - the VAT will go on food that is warmed up.

As for the OP, it should be pointed out that smokers are an easy target.

Despite the price going up significantly every year and the smoking ban stopping people lighting up inside commercial/public premises, people still smoke in large numbers.

The only thing that would stop Chancellors (of any party) from raising the cost of a packet of fags would be for large numbers to stop smoking. But as they are too addicted, they don't. Hence it being a simple tax to raise each year.

Personally I'd have predicted five years ago that the smoking ban would have seen the number of smokers come down significantly, but the reality is that its had nothing like as big a different in numbers as was intended, people can't quit.

About the only consolation is that even an £8 packet of twenty is only 40p per fag. Not much compared to some of life's "luxuries"...
