This evening I decided I would enjoy a nice leisurely Devon Evening Ranger, nothing strange about that of course, but when I got my ticket I was told that "the evening ranger now comes in two parts"!

The "other part" turned out to be a date box, surely this is completely pointless, as the Ranger is only valid for 1 day, and said day is printed in very large font on the ticket itself?

Or is there some reasonable explanation for this?

PS: picture of the two parts attached...

That is pretty strange as I can see no possible reason why they would need to provide date boxes with an Evening/Day Ranger.

Has anyone else had a Devon Evening Ranger or any other Day/Evening Day Ranger with date boxes?

It is possible it could be an error confined to one terminal/station/issuing system?

Date boxes are usually only provided for Flexi Rovers.

It is likely to be a misconfiguration on the TIS.

Thats what I thought. Person entering the software during an upgrade or other has done it for all rovers/rangers without thinking that its silly to do it for ones that are just a day.

Very lazy.

Definitely seems to be a TIS error. Just tried it on FasTIS and, as expected, it only printed one coupon.

Cheers,

Ive had plenty dayrangers in the north and none ever come like that. It does seem pointless & to be fair, expect the staff do too.

I had a Lancashire Day Ranger yesterday with just one ticket.
Had more of a problem with guards knowing what the ticket was and where valid.

it's a new thing that has appeared on all rangers and rovers in last few weeks, only logical explantion is so that someone cant send for a refund stating they havent used it (as rovers wont be clipped).

The best one I've had off of a guard in relation to an 8 in 15 FOSW between Newport and Bristol was "I haven't a clue if this is valid on this train, I'll just trust you on that one."

I'll be buying a couple of day rangers in the next couple of weeks, I'll see if they have date boxes.

I didn't get one on the 7th of March with a North Wales Day Ranger.

With date boxes as well no one ever seems to bother checking them.

I know it says "Issued as 2 Coupons" but would anyone really notice (or care) if you didn't show the date boxes?

Yes. I've been using them for months, almost nobody asks for the boxes. One EMT guard who knows his job has asked for it. I was also on a TPE 185 and the conductor in front of me was checking tickets. He looked quite benign but then all of a sudden I heard a voice behind me, "tickets, passes and railcards!" This was an RPA. I showed my rover, the other two windows had my Priv and photocard showing. He took the wallet from me, searched through it for the date box and properly inspected it although he clearly had no idea where it was actually valid :p

It is likely to be a one-off occurrence. Maybe someone else can buy the same product at a nearby location, Newton Abbot maybe, and see if it prints the same.

I had a similar response from a gateline assistant when showing a Heart of Wessex Day Ranger, saying, "Not sure if this is valid at this station, but I'll trust you, as you say it is."

Unless you can say "NO" with 100% certainty, you have to say "Yes", is my response to situations like that.

I generally just print off a map of the permitted area and have that with me - it's useful in th above situations, and just helpful to have generally.

I bought a Devon Ranger from Exeter St Davids last Thursday 15th March, and it was issued normally, with just the one ticket.

Well, just gone down to EXD to get a Devon Ranger for Thursday, and to my surprise it was issued in two coupons, just like the with the OP. The woman said that this is how they are issued now.

Quick question, on the second coupon (the 'date boxes' one), should I fill in 29/3 where in the box that hasn't been filled in with X's. The woman said something along those lines but I couldn't quite catch what she said.

Have a look at my picture in the original post, I've always done them that way, so it must be correct.

There's nothing printed on the Day Ranger to say a date box is required.

No other Day Ranger I've ever seen has ever come with date boxes; it's utterly pointless.

(and before anyone points out it says 2 coupons, some ticket machines count the receipt as a coupon, while some do not)
