Having my first trip on a Voyager for a while, and was surprised to find the trolley offering hot bacon rolls. Is this something new ?

Yes, although I think there's only 4 being delivered to each train in a morning at the moment as a trial to see how popular it is.

The hot bacon rolls were annnounced after departure from Bristol Parkway. The trolley then came through from coach F to coach A. At Cheltenham another announcement referred to them simply as bacon rolls !

Well they wouldn't taste very nice cold!;) I think how it's supposed to work is you order from the man with the trolley who then gives you a receipt and then crewcalls the first class host, tells them how many to cook and for the occupants of which seats. The First Class Host then delivers them.

If by any chance Mr AM or Mr JH is reading this, I'll be in your ear about doing something similar with burgers during the rest of the day next time I see you.......!

That sounds totally impractical on a busy train. When the shops were removed, didn't they install the microwave in the pantry in coach F, something to do with the franchise commitment to hot food availability ? I remember them being used sporadically and then abandoned.

Errr, Smethwick!
You're lucky to see an XC trolley at all, never mind one with any more substantial food than an extortionately-priced bag of crisps or a tiny packet of biscuits.

The last time I did see one, on a journey from Nottingham to Birmingham New Street on Saturday, the trolley was parked in a doorway for the whole journey and its young female minder sat nearby texting or otherwise using her mobile phone. And no, the train was not overcrowded or too full of luggage for the trolley to do what its wheels are intended to enable it to do.

Hot Food? On A XC Voyager Service?!?! Is the OP sure he wasn't dreaming? I buy my own food and take it with me on XC services now. Their coffee is alright though I guess.

Aren't the Turbostar routes trollies still Rail Gourmet? They certainly don't have a first class host to do leg work!

Remind me to give it a try :p

Nothing wrong with cold bacon rolls (unless they're cold because they haven't been cooked obviously). A very useful food supply!

You need to try a Vomiter route. To their credit, the XC trolleys are quite efficient and well-stocked! I guess XC have to be good at something.

Never mind burgers, bring back the brunch muffin! We may have to sit on nasty modern trains but at least we could enjoy good old BR food.

I had a bacon roll in June 2010 from Birmingham to Leeds albeit as leftovers from breakfast . Can't be sure if it was a voyager though

The whole situation with onboard catering is ridiculous now. It seems obvious to me that any medium-distance train should have at least a trolley on it, and any long-distance the option of a full meal.

It's worth a try;) The demand for hot food is there after all!

PS - to the chap who said it was impractical - it worked just fine the other day. Busy commuter train too!

I've always felt that if you're doing a long stint on a train - say Sheffield-Paignton at 4 hours and a bit - then there should be something hot available to you. It might even be an opportunity to make a bit of money!:)

I agree. There are times when a cold sandwich just doesn't do it! We need more microwaveable snacks!
