Are there many cases like this?

Bletchley to Hackney Central CDR is £25.80
Bletchley to London Zones 1-6 ODT is £20.00

Seems bizarre! On a weekend, there is no difference in restrictions.

I wonder what the ticket office would sell if I asked for the cheapest return to Hackney Central...

The would either offer the cheapest return fare as you had requested, or they would offer the cheapest fare for your journey.

Quite a few on a weekend - advantage with the Hackney Central CDR is no evening peak restrictions Mon-Fri.

Similarly, on FCC, a Super Off Peak Day Travelcard (valid at the weekend only) costs less than pretty much every through ticket to a Z1-6 destination (except just going to St Pancras/Kings Cross, where a Super Off Peak Day Return exists)

The CDR in this case, allows cross london transfer to get to Hackney Central, also in addition to this, paper (single or return) tickets for journeys on London Overground are hideously expensive compared to the Oyster fare for the same journey, so I think that explains why the CDR is more expensive than the Travelcard!

Would the Travelcard not also allow this?

What I would do is to buy Bletchley - 1072 CDR at £14.50, then pay two Oyster singles at £1.40 each, changing at Harrow & Weladstone and Willesden Junction. However, the person who asked me to look is non-Oyster and won't buy one...

Yes it would :) As I say, the only benefit to the Hackney Central ticket is the lack of a weekday evening peak restriction.

I think molesey boy was explaining LMs logic behind the ticket (i.e. the fact a premium has possibly been insisted on by LO to encourage Oyster use generally) rather than saying it makes sense! :P

Yes the travelcard allows as much travel in Z1-6 as you want, but tickets with cross london transfer are not normally cheap, hence the London Terminals CDR being quite a bit cheaper as it doesn't involve the LO journey or cross london transfer. The Travelcard is very good value and would be my choice, just in case you then make more journeys than you had first planned.

That's exactly what I was trying to say, just didn't say it as clearly as you :p
