Does anyone know why in this day and age you don't seem to be able to book a through ticket from Edinburgh to Belfast online through Scotrail?

With Arriva you can book to the Republic of Ireland online from any UK Rail Station.

Both obviously include ferry travel.

Am I incorrect (I hope so) :p

Don't think they want to sell the tickets online!
On the scotrail journey planner instead of Belfast port enter bfa ( code for Belfast port) this will work or use national rail journey planner then choose buy from scotrail and this works. If you are happy to pay a £1 fee I find train line is the most reliable seller of rail sail tickets. Finally if you have time you can buy via the Stena web site choose rail sail and they will post tickets. Hope this works for you, I tried for tickets on 4/4/12 on Scotrail site and it gave me several options. Have a great trip

Thanks for the tip - I booked flight for £21 instead with no farting about and printed my boarding pass out there and then :p

No wonder so many people fly when the above palava is involved plus it takes less than an hour and is cheaper

Agreed pity rail can't make the process simple! Remember to take a small case to avoid baggage charges

There was a problem at the start of the year that Sail Rail tickets couldn't be booked online, due to a change in the system. Not sure if this has been rectified yet.

Will have to look for that one, Ta.

If you fly on Easyjet they have whacked on a £9 administration fee which you can't get out of by using any type of card to pay(crafty buggers :p)

However the flights start from £15.99 and I believe thats per transaction so if you book a return you could get it for about £40.

I had to come back on Flybe which went up £15 while I was farting about making my mind up - so I ended up coughing £45 for that one (no fees as I use a visa electron)

It's £10 return from International to City Centre or £2 each way to City on the bus.

Using the aeroplane does make a day trip feasible - out at 0700 and back at 1955 so you've got a good 10-12 hours :p

Its much the same with the South Coast to Scotland where rail is frankly uncompetitive. I used to fly regularly to Glasgow and my connection to Southampton Airport parkway was a Virgin XC service to Glasgow. By the time the train was approaching Glasgow I was taking off back to southampton having hired a car and made 2 business meetings along the Clyde>

Strange you should say that as I had to book a return trip from Edinburgh to Southampton for the summer recently. I had to cough nearly £90 but it's well worth it for the time saving. The increase in APD is kicking in you used to get Birmingham to Edinburgh for £25 quite easily but it's over £30 now at the cheapest. I do like travelling by train but sometimes speed is of the essence.

I've done £60 Return from East Mids-Belfast City on BMI Baby, sadly I can't do it as a Saturday Day Trip.
