And here is why sat navs should never be used in lieu of proper planning and maps

Or simply purchasing a sat nav that is for use by HGVs and knows these routes, I nearly ended up in a similar situation thanks to Ovi Maps in Huddersfeild, fortunately one knows the length of his vehicle and managed to do a 28 (not kidding) point turn to get round a tight switchback. Would have been that or an insanely long reverse and diversion.

If you got a laptop in the cab and you do get stuck look at google maps street view, i sometimes use it to look at addresses to see if theres parking outside or if there tight to get into.

I also use it if a road im delivering to has a bridge, can look at street view to see the height of the bridge, came in handy when i delieverd to Gresty lane/road in Crewe not so long ago.

The planner went out with a standard sat-nav and it tried to take him down a road with a low bridge. Thankfully common sense prevailed with that but I think it illustrates the problem and why these problems occur

To be honest, this was kind of shown on the Stobart show the other night.

The planner went out with a standard sat-nav and it tried to take him down a road with a low bridge. Thankfully common sense prevailed with that but I think it illustrates the problem and why these problems occur

But he didn't know how to tie a load, do his curtains properly, or even about automatic trailer brakes (when main air resevoir drops), how did he pass his CPC?

And he was completely baffled by a telephone ringing in his cab the other week...... oh how i f**king cried laughing.

I drove on grandfather rights (Not done a CPC, did load training with the RLC though) when I was doing commercials and I was still thinking, "you f***ing idiot" most of the time.

After the dispatcher or depot foreman sees that I'd be supprised if they ever let him near a vehicle again. Also, arguing with your planner like that, if I'd have talked back to London or Woucster like that when I was driving I would have been met at the depot by a P45.

We regularly get lorries turning up at the "back" of the site where I work. Used to be a proper entrance, now a foot and cycle only one, and has been so for 5-10 years. Not the easiest of places to turn their lorries around.

Would help if the preferred route in from the main road had black "lorry" signs. We're a big enough site to warrant them.

I should say that vast majority of confused drivers I see as I arrive by bike have british number plates. Don't think I've seen any Polish ones there. The occasional dutch lorry. The French, German, Spanish etc numberplates all seem to find the correct entrance.

My tomtom has an option to select HGV mapping, it wasnt a expensive tomtom neither

nope i always plan with a map, and only use sat nav for speed camera alerts, and if i get lost in the last mile or so of trip

I've not seen it, but I'd guess he's had his licence long enough that he didn't have to do the initial CPC.

Thats twice now that Eddie Stobart Trucks and Trailers has made passing an HGV test look easy, its what ****es me off about the programme, they glamorise trucking and make it look great and easy, they really don't show how stressfull it is and the sacrafices that drivers make being away all week, how hard it is to hold down a relationship when your away all the time, and what we have to put up with to earn a living!

With all due respect, this driver appears to have damaged his trailer by failing to visually understand that he could not advance alomg the route ahead of him. What does this have to do with Satnav or any other guidance.

Sat Navs baught in the UK (or decent ones at least) have an "HGV Mode" that will not route you down roads like that. There is also the question that there was proberbly, somwehere allong that road, a visual warning sign of a maximum vehicle length or width.
