As of today First Great Western will be operating a Magic Carpet service between Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads. This innovative addition to FGW's ageing HST fleet is expected to reduce journey times between the two cities to less than one hour. First Class passengers may expect a journey on 100% wool, whilst Second Class will consist of a more hard-wearing tufted nylon experience. Passengers are warned that if planned engineering works at Keynsham over-run a replacement Flying Linoleum Service will be provided.

Who needs air con when you've got the wind in your face at 125mph? :p

Actually, come to think of it, you'd probably fall off...

Thats its USP, dont get that on XC for example (unless they introduce seats on top of the trains, which is probably in the pipeline, may even be announced today).

That could make for quite a shocking passenger experience on the sections of the ECML and WCML they run over.

You must not make light of such a serious point. That well know scientific writer Dionysius Lardner has pointed out, in his research into a tunnel through Box Hill, that human beings would suffocate at such ludicrous speeds !

That's Doctor Dionysius Lardner to you, Wiltshire boy.

Ah well, thereby hangs a tale................I deliberately did not use the word "Doctor" as there is no firm evidence that Dionysius Lardner was actually entitled to use such a title in connection with his "engineering" pronouncements. It would appear to have been used to impress his audience more than anything - it certainly didn't seem to have helped his arguments in many cases

He was an LL.D (Dublin); but this is a legal award and there is some doubt as to whether this did actually entitle the holder to use the term "Doctor", most references to (Mr/Professor/Rev) Lardner do not use this term.
