Hi,
Sorry if I'm asking a daft question here but I've been looking at train fares for about 45 minutes and I'm even more confused than when I started.

There are two of us wanting to travel from Dewsbury to Harrogate, leaving in the morning and returning in the evening. (Last time I did this I switched at Leeds). We will probably be travelling on a weekday this or next week.

We both hold WY Metro Scholars photocards, but I've no idea if this means anything because I thought if you were over 15 you had to pay full fare regardless of what card you have?

There is a day ticket, but it wont take us to Harrogate, so is it better just to buy a return at the station?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for your help, unfortunately both over 18 and neither of us have railcards!

Thanks again!

Are you aged between 16 and 18 (inclusive)? If so, youy Scholars Photocards give you half price train travel within West Yorkshire. See [/QUOTE] Actually between 16 and...me very peculiar routing I don't know about).

Thanks for your help, that makes sense. One final question, will the person at the ticket desk know this or will I have to ask specifically? Thanks once again

Indeed, Deerfold, hence why I said 16 to 18 inclusive, thus including 18 year olds. The WYPTE website doesn't actually mention any restrictions relating to accademic years as far as I can see.

I agree with your advice, just to expand on it a little, a YP railcard costs £28.00. It gives a third off most second class non-season rail fares (subject to the pre 10:00 weekday restiction apart from July and Augusts for fares which would fall below £12.00), so if you are likely to spend more than £74.00 on rail fares within the next year a YP is a good deal.

Ask specifically for the two tickets.

Thanks for both of your help, this has helped a lot! I'm assuming we'd be fine to stay on the train at Horsforth and that the conductor wouldn't have a problem with us having 2 sets of tickets?

No. So long as you have tickets to and from the station and the train stops there (if you get the evening East Coast train that's come from London that doesn't stop at Horsforth).

I think guards are fairly used to this sort of thing at West Yorkshire boundary stations for 15-18 year olds and senior fares. I've had no problems using a day rover to the station before the boundary and another ticket from there.

You are covered under Conditions of Carriage. See:
19. Using a combination of tickets
You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire
journey and one of the following applies:
...
(b) the train you are in calls at a station where you change from one
ticket to another; or
..."
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/system/galleries/download/misc/NRCOC.pdf

You just need to make sure that the train stops at Horsforth. I believe the only one that doesn't is the through Kings X to Harrogate.

Just to expand on the fares, you will pay (each):
Dewsbury-Horsforth cheap day return £2.60 (with your Scholar Photocard)
Horsforth-Harrogate cheap day return £6.00
Total £8.60

As opposed to £11.20 for a through adult day return.

In fact, if you both travel together both ways, you could buy a Horsforth-Harrogate Northern Duo, priced at £9.00 for the two of you, saving a further £3.00.

At Dewsbury you will need to ask for the split specifically otherwise they will just sell a straight through ticket.

I have used this station many times for many different ticket combinations and they usually have no problems with it (they can issue them all in one transaction so you won't need to pay for each set separately)

Another little tip I have found - if you get the xx:07 (to Newcastle) or xx:37 (to Middlesbrough), if I remember correctly, it gives about 6 mins connection onto the Harrogate service. Whilst this is under the minimum connection time, if you don't linger about, it is easily doable, and you will probably get more time if the train beats the recovery time into Leeds (I have sometimes arrived 5 minutes earlier than booked arrival time). Naturally, if you were to not make the connection, you'd have to get the one 30 mins later, which you would have got had you taken NRE's advice and got the Northern stopper and had a 20 min wait at Leeds.

Thanks for pointing that out clagmonster. I completely overlooked that bit (it has been a long day!) and also made a bad assumption about the validity of the Duo tickets (given that it is Northern, I thought that meant the other operators wouldn't accept them) - my mistake.

There are no other operators Horsforth to Harrogate are there?

Generally not though there is an early morning East Coast service which serves both, though I misread which part the Duo was for anyway

That's why I said Horsforth to Harrogate! EC only serve Horsforth Southbound. TBH I hadn't thought about whether a Duo is valid on other operators. I suspect there's not many stations where there are any. I think the only Duo route I've been on when not alone is Hebden Bridge-Manchester Vic.

For clarity, Northern Duo tickets are valid on other operators, and this is reflected in the route being 'Any Permitted'. However they are generally only available for a select few routes, mostly away from main lines.

Most Northern Duo tickets that I know of are sold on lines where Northern are either the only service provider or provide most of the journeys.

There is Harrogate-Leeds (it would be valid on a Saturday morning) and vice-versa. Cleethorpes-Habrough is valid on TPE and EMT, as are Cleethorpes-Grimsby and Grimsby-Habrough. I suppose return portions of tickets onto the Barton branch are valid on TPE and EMT services on the mainline, although I've never done it. Marsden/Slaithwaite-Manchester would be valid on TPE Stalybridge-Manchester. I'm sure there are quite a few.
