I have not been to this station in a while and I was wondering what is it like ? What companies serve the station etc

I normally go to Haymarket.

Operators are:
ScotRail
East Coast
CrossCountry
Virgin Trains
First Transpennine Express

As I understand it there's a refurbishment underway.

. . . . . there's a refurbishment underway.
And a substantial one at that!
One of the 2 vehicle ramps is closed (the northernmost ramp), the southern exit is entirely enclosed in temporary wooden pannelling, and nearly all of the roof is obscured by steel and netting while the glass work is replaced.
Its not in its best state at present, but none of this work, extensive as it is, appears to have any impact on functionality and operations.
Excepting the new escalators of course, which have their own thread here : New Waverley Escalators Flawed also mentioned here : Edinburgh Waverley and their taxi issues here : Taxis to be evicted from Waverley due to "terror threat"

The roofing at the East end - head towards the Calton Road entrance - is complete. The difference is night and day (excuse the pun).

There is major rebuilding going on on the rest of the station roofing at present, and the access to island platforms 8/9 is being completely rebuilt.

The mountainous Waverley Steps are being turned into escalators - more's the pity, the daily Waverley Steps hike was half my weekly exercise.

In 2007/8 the track layout was completely revised, the present platforms 10, 20 and 1 were built from scratch and all the terminus platforms 12-18 were electrified. Haymarket platform zero was built to accommodate short-stopping services while the work was being done.

It'll look great in 2013 when it's all finished :)
