Kingmoor, Kirkby Stephen and Scottish Engineers 7.4.12

I decided to take a trip south to the Kirkby Stephen Vintage Vehicles Rally today. Enroute, I stopped off at Carlisle Kingmoor, taking my photos from the nature reserve at the opposite side of the WCML from the depot. Spotted there was

37401, 37406, 37410, 37411, 37416, 37417, 37426, 37427, 37612, 37667, 57003, 57008

I then stopped off at Kirkby Stephen Station, it is one of the nicest stations I have seen. Here is 158794 arriving with a service for Carlisle. Next I went to the Stainmore railway at Kirkby Stephen. It was quite busy. Seen were

20169, 37146, 31410, 37674, 47785, NER Fletcher 910 and FC Tingley

On the way home i nipped into the Eden Valley Railway at Warcrop to catch a photo of ex royal train loco 47799 and ex EWS 37042.

Heading back into Scotland I took the old A74 road home from the Beattock turnoff and spotted a number of engineering movements, these were

I too was at the Stainmore Railway yesterday. That class 20 doesn't half make a lot of clag! I was very impressed by what they have achieved at Kirkby Stephen East, and all within the last 10 years or so. What are the chances of relaying the branch all the way to Appleby? I couldn't find much info as what was preventing it, although it seems that bridges were removed when the track was lifted?

I also saw the old station at Smardale on my travels up to Smardale Viaduct, converted into a house. You can still see the old platform, and the trackbed is obvious.

From up above the viaduct you can see the trackbed going under the viaduct, now a walk, and in the distance is a masonry viaduct (Smardale Gill I think) that I think is now part of the walk. Such a shame that these incredible structures no longer carry trains.

(There were also a lot of classic coaches around Kirkby Stephen including a London Routemaster - must be a club or something!)

You could hear the class 20 long before you could see it I was also impressed by the Stainmore Railway as well. I'd passed it in October and had taken some photos from the outside as it was closed at the time and the amount of work they have done since then such as the partial repaint to 31410 to make it look a bit more presentable was remarkable. I especially like 47785, it looks amazing in the EWS livery. Do you know if it is a runner?

It would be interesting to see if they could reach Appleby and join up with the Eden Valley railway. However I noticed going between the 2 railways that there was a rather large bridge over a river that was missing, but still maybe in a few years it might happen.

(There were also a lot of classic coaches around Kirkby Stephen including a London Routemaster - must be a club or something!)

I think the classic buses were being used as a free shuttle between Kirkby Stephen Station, Stainmore Railway, Kirkby Stephen town centre and the Eden Valley Railway as there were vintage vehicles all over Kirkby Stephen.

The line between Warcop and Appleby is still in situ, albeit in poor condition, and connected to the main line at Appleby. The Thumper and 4-CEPS at the Eden Valley Railway were actually delivered by rail via the connection at Appleby.

The Eden Valley Railway currently operates trains from Warcop to Sandford Bridge (almost 2 miles) and is aiming to reopen the line from Warcop to Appleby. If the Stainmore Railway are successful in their plans, they will meet the Eden Valley Railway at Warcop (actually at Flitholme, about half a mile south-east of Warcop, where the Eden Valley Railway's line ends, but even fewer people have heard of Flitholme than Warcop).

The classic buses were part of the Easter Classic Commercial Vehicle Rally based at Brough and Kirkby Stephen (http://www.cumbriaclassiccoaches.co.uk/ecvg.asp) which is a fine event, involving vintage vehicles of many kinds, not just buses and coaches.

It would be good to see the Stainmore Railway join the EVR in the future. How long is the Stainmore Railway at the moment and how far is it from Kirkby Stephen to Warcrop?

The EVR is, at some point this year, extending its running line by about half a mile. The work has been done, and it is awaiting approval from the Railway Inspectorate. It would have been nice to have had it in use for the start of the season but the inspection hasn't happened yet.
