Surely being an Admin all this info is at his fingertips on the servers and databases?

But things like OS and tinternet provider, that seems like something odd for the forum to log.

The browsers etc make themselves easily enough identifiable.

Why shouldn't the forum logs record it? It is what pretty much every single website in the world does.

A tech forum would find the OS stats quite interesting as you'd then see how many geeks do actually use Linux and how many style-boys there are using iOS.

Very interesting information here :), it's nice to see that a friendly forum like this, can continue to grow and grow. :)

All of that, and more, is available in Google Analytics (which I presume the forum uses?).

It merely aggregates the data your browser provides. It can be very useful for web developers, knowing what browsers and OS's people use.

You'd be amazed what gets logged online.
A website I have helped in developing recently logs user IP address and OS/browser and that is only when submitting a contact form.

The IP address alone would be enough to identify your ISP I think, and the other stuff isn't all that difficult to log either

I believe that OS, browser, screen resolution etc is worked out using Javascript :)

Also, the Operating System - surely iPhone should be iOS as it could be an iPod touch or an iPad I believe? Not sure as not been involved with web development for a short while!

Not bad. Too much iCrap for my liking though <( ;)

The resolution one is interesting to see up there. Are widescreen browsers becomes more prevalent? I go on other sites and little is more frustrating than seeing hardly any width being used

When reading these statistics, I naively didn't anticipate that it would turn into some 'mine is bigger than yours' posturing!

In response to the concerns about browser and OS details being available to the forum, then I must say that anyone with a genuine reason for concern should be directing their attention not at this or any other forum or site (all web servers log these details of all page requests) but at their reason for secrecy. There is poor compatibility between secrecy and web access.

Looking at the changing trends, and coupling those with the growth in membership and in active users, I must say that the staff deserve some thanks for maintaining the standards of polite and informative discussion in what must, sometimes, be quite a hostile and chaotic environment.

A most thoughtful and well constructed comment from one of the most well-respected members of this forum. Very well said indeed.

I found this bit interesting - are these the top four providers? Because if so that means that the ISP market is a lot more diversified than I realised - I assumed that the biggest four would have a lot more than a sixth of the entire market (e.g. the big four Mobile Phone companies must have a significant majority of market share).

As an aside I found this bit interesting

Doesn't that add up to more than 100% or is there some trick I missed with these stats?. :D. Sorry but not sure what these stats prove other than of course browsing by phone is a lot more popular than before.

Maybe rounding errors?

A couple of observations,

Why no Linux or Android as an OS?

Sky and Easynet are the same ISP, Sky bought them out in 2005 and use their network in some areas, hence the reporting as Easynet.

I clearly don't exist as I am currently typing this using Opera on Linux Mint and use Be as my ISP.

The OS figures don't sum to 100% so I'd be guessing Linux and Android make up the remainder as well as BSD/Solaris etc.
