The NCB inherited a handful of tender locos from private mine railways in County Durham, and according to the IRS history, NCB also purchased one ex- NER/LNER 0-6-0.

I think you will find that the font and loco livery varied according to the Area of which there were many and each had its own central workshops eg North West - Walkden, Durham - Philadelphia, Northumberland - Ashington

I have found this already looking through a few flickr galleries, through looking through them the most common colour seem's to be rusted green. Information on the NCB rail operations has been hard to come by as I have been researching It for a railworks project I am working on, and due to the lack of information in general I am asking here.
In regard to the central workshops would they be connected to the different collieries in an area by a private network or engines transfered to them for maintenance via road or B.R metals?

There is a wealth of information out there - its just that it is spread widely among many sources!
The Industrial Railway Society is a good place to start - Google their website and ask for help on their Yahoo Group.
Helpful books might be - 'Steam In the Coalfields' by G T Heavyside Publisher David and Charles 1977 which lists the pits and their respective area. For really detailed information on one area look out for 'The Private Railways of County Durham' by Colin Mountford, an IRS publication that has a lot of information about the NCB railways and workshops with loads of pictures [its expensive to buy]. 'Railway Bylines' magazine usually has an article about NCB systems every month.
AFAIK Locos were regularly transferred by road to workshops if not on systems with a direct rail link- for example the mines in West Cumbria had their locos repaired at Walkden in Manchester.
