I genuinely find this quite confusing. I passed my managers interview and all assessments with Northern two weeks ago for a position in Leeds and have since been told that I would have my application put on hold as they had had so many successful applicants at the assesment day.

Now they're advertising for Leeds again!

Went to the interview in Leeds which went really well, then to the assessment in Doncaster which i passed (that was almost 4 weeks ago) haven't heard anything from Northern since. Now they are advertising for more drivers - laugh or cry (who knows)

Hey guys I am back, old username seems to be long gone :/

I have also applied for this post but thought I would just let you know, I called Northern today to make them aware of a NI error on my application form. Whilst I was on the phone I used the " My friend has passed everything and has not heard anything back, with it coming up again do you know what the issues is" basically. She said as far as she knows there was a change in circumstances and more are needed. So they are waiting to get everyone together.

I'll take back what i said. Got a rather large envelope in the post the other day and it was from Northern with a conditional offer of employment and welcome pack. Medical is on Thursday - miracles do happen!

All the best with your new career, my interview on Monday is for Conductor but also have an application in for Driver.
I was a Conductor at Victoria in 2005 for 3 years but left to try something else. Enjoyed the job though and hopefully will get back into it before long. I remember applying back then and at the interview the Manager asked me two questions and if I thought I could handle the training. I said yes and that was it, I was in. Seems a bit more difficult now.. good luck.

Cheers, according to my welcome pack one of the routes i will be working on is the Leeds - Skipton airedale line so we may cross paths if you are successful. Good luck with the interview

Delph,

Have a look at the company websites. Search for train driver vacancees and you will most likely be directed to sites that you are able to submit a CV and an application too.

Best of luck!

Hi mate, would you be able to tell me a bit more about the assessment day you went to with Northern? What tests did you sit? Presumably it's the dots test, train-ability, reactions, but do nothern still do mechanical aptitude test too? And is it followed by an interview?

Also, what's the medical like? What kind of questions do they ask etc?

Been looking to try and get into the rail industry for some time, hopefully with northern but am happy to relocate, but before I start applying for roles I want to put a bit of prep in to both the application and practice the tests.

Well done on getting a job too mate, that's sweet! :D

Thanks

Hi Jaybird

Northern still require you to do the mechanical aptitude test 4.1 which is the harder of the two tests (4.2 being the other). The other tests that I did were the group bourdon, trainability for rules and regs and reaction. If you pass all that you then have to sit a structured interview in the afternoon which consists of 5 questions where you have to provide experience and skills that are relevant to the train driver role, (keeping calm under pressure, times when you have had to follow rules and regs, working on your own and as part of a team and times you have had to deal with an emergency)

The medical consists of eye and hearing tests, ecg, bp, drugs and alcohol and urine tests for diabetes, excess protein and blood.

Hope this helps

That's great dugster, thanks for replying. From what I understand from reading on the forum I believe mechanical aptitude 4.1 is a lot harder than general mechanical aptitude tests and bears no relation to either practice material sent out by TOCs or to the Baron's practice book?

Did you manage to find any relevant study material to help you prepare for 4.1? I've been searcing on the net but even trusty google struggles to find anything directly relevant.

Based on the test you sat is it even worth working through the Baron's book or would I be better spending my time focussing on the other areas?

My working life so far hasn't been mechanical at all - more customer service, and I'm worried that this area is the hurdle I'll fall at. :(

If you get MT4.1 the harder of the 2 papers, there is a mixture of questions, on joints, pivots, levers, sliders, bell cranks, tree felling, rivets, pipes, pulleys, rack and gears, cams, flag poles, tyres, wheels, circuits and liquids from what I remember, plus other stuff. MT4.2 is the far, far easier one and its mostly questions on cogs [if cog A turns clockwise what does cog E turn], pulleys and gravity, but it seems to be very rarely used now, though it used to be used all the time going back 5+ years. However you dont need mechanical experience to pass either of these papers. I didnt have any the first time round, and have sat MT4.1 three times and MT4.2 once and passed them every time. What really helps is that you dont run out of time and get to the end of the test. If you run out of time and leave about 10 questions blank at the end, thats not going to help at all. There is no book that helps with MT4.1. The Barrons book is just about the best of a bad bunch. It will help with maybe 2 or 3 questions that are in MT4.1, out of the 36.

Hi Mick, I did the MT4 a couple of years ago, and I've never had to do it since because everytime I go for a driver's job, they either tell me I don't have to do it (again) or they don't do it at all (most TOCs). Do you think I would have to do the '4.1' even though I did the '4.0'.?

I've never heard of 4.0. are you sure you sat an MT4.0 and not a 4.1 or 4.2?

I could be wrong....I did the MT4 in March 2010 with DB Schenker, the standard one of the 6 parts of the assessment and not additional etc. So you think that one is the MT4.1 then? Cheers Mick

Thanks again for your response. Did you have to submit a CRB check before you started with northern? I've seen on here that some TOCs use a CRB and some don't. I haven't got any convictions or anything but I was arrested once when I was a bit younger and stupid, but not charged with anything.

I'm not sure whether they did or not, all I can remember is the question on the application form about whether or not I had any previous convictions. If you haven't been charged and convicted of anything then it won't be on your record so you have nothing to worry about there.

Was you given a warning? I have had a CRB check done on me a few weeks ago and the section on Convictions includes warnings. So possibile this could be included if you was given one.
